My 19-4 is p&r. I called S&W and they gave me a mfr date of 1980 based on the serial number. However when I checked the SCSW it says 1977-78. I'm confused :(

They stopped pinning barrels and eliminated recessed cylinder chambers on magnums around 1982. It was a transitional change with some guns that had one feature or the other, using up work in process in typical S&W fashion.

First, the date that S&W gave you is not a manufacturing date, it is a shipping date. That is the information that is required to be kept by the Federal Government. The Government does not care when you made it, just when it was transfered to the next owner.

The SCSW is just a guideline to dates and every rule has exceptions. Firearms were not completed or shipped in serial number order.

with the previous owner telling me about this being his duty gun when he was a deputy, I think I'm going to get a factory letter for this one...I'd love to know it's history.
