Default 625 Perf. Center

Does anyone have experience with this model? (170161)

I've been craving a .45 ACP revolver for a while now and I've always wanted a Performance Center model as well. This seems to satisfy both criteria so maybe I can kill two birds with one stone. I'm interested in people's experience with this model, good or bad. It's primary use will be a range gun.

What do you guy's/gal's think?

That is there new offering which probably hasn't even hit the stores yet. I have a number of performance center offerings about half of which are chambered for 45ACP. If I ran across one and had the cash, i'd buy it . . . I'm betting that it will top $1,100 retail.

If you're looking for a range gun, I'd look for an older pre-lock, pre-mim 625 and you'll get a comparable trigger pull for less cash. To me the new performance center offerings are just how they used to make them before the turn of this century. Tough call.

Here is Smith's Product Release for it:

Default It's a re-run.....

That is a re-run model from the original made for Camfour in 2002, the big difference is the hideous grips.... sorry - they don't do it for me.
The original gun was a companion to the 5" that was also made for Camfour, here is the flyer for the 5" (sorry for the poor scan) and a picture of the 4" model (they did not do a flyer on the original 4" gun)

BTW - the original grips that were on the Camfour model were also of the Miculek shape, but were green in color, mine never left the store, I couldn't stand them either.... Shown above with the obligatory Spegel Boot grips, ahhhh much better IMO.

Thanks guy's! I agree the grips will probably have to go before I shoot it but that's an easy fix. I guess it's too new for anyone to have a lot of trigger time behind, but I'd really like to know how it (this particular model) shoots. The price doesn't bother me as long as it preforms well. However, I'm unsure why most prefer the pre-lock guns. Can you fill me in?

That is a good looking revolver for sure. Don't know about the grips, as patriotic as I am. They remind me of Buck Owens's guitar he played on hee-haw.

There was one of these listed on Gunbroker awhile back for $899 that was relisted several times without any takers. For you folks that have shot one of these PC 625 versions............are these barrels signifigantly more accurate than the regular barrels. I have read the hype about the "deep, broach cut rifling". I also seem to remember reading an article that these barrels produced ho-hum accuracy. I have a 625-4 with a 4" barrel that is quite the tackdriver. I would be very interested in another 4" gun that had true "bullseye gun" potential. I do like the fact that Smith does not bead-blast these PC versions. I wonder what kind of a trigger pull you get from the Performance Center these days. The last PC gun I purchased(686-6 light rail) came with an awful trigger. I sent it back to Smith and they did clean it up, but it was still too heavy for my tastes. As usual, I ended up tuning this gun myself.

I had three of the 5.25" guns at one time. Two were sold off on GunBroker and my best friend got the best of the three...although all of them were about like new.

It was the finest shooting S&W .45 ACP revolver I have ever shot... I have an agreement with my friend of right of first refusal should he ever sell it... All three of the guns were in the PC cases and were the ones without the IL...$750.00 each...

Default Camfour PC 625-8

I got one of the 4 inch barrel guns. Grips went into the box and a set of Hogue Mono's in their place. Revolver is a tack driver. Ejector rod extra long for positive extraction. Cylinder chamber edges rounded to aid in reloading.

Thanks for the positive info. I'd prefer the 4" to 5.25" barrel but both seem like great guns. I don't know how much different the accuracy between the two would be but it seems like they're both tack drivers.

I have started a fund dedicated to buying a S&W .45 ACP revolver this year, I am glad to hear that this is a new offering (and may stay available while the fund builds). If I cannot find a 625-6 this gun will probably be what I get.

I wish they would just make a plain jane tapered barrel 25 or 625 in 4" and leave it in the catalog for a while.

They kinda do, but it has fixed sights. It's the 22-4.

The SHOT show is in a few weeks and new models are coming out.

And this thread is a year old, so who knows how much longer they'll offer the PC 625. I just bought one of these and they're awesome.

I actually looked on the internet for adjustable sight ribs, but the only ones I found are the Aristocrat ribs for bull barrel PPC guns. With .45 loads running from 155-65 grain powderpuff target loads to +P 230 HPs I want adjustable sights.

Didn't realize this thread was that old when I saw it this morning.

I wonder whether the PC 625 really offers all that much more than the 625JM. I have a JM and it's a superb gun. Well, it is after I got a couple of kinks ironed out. Mine came with a barrel-cylinder gap of almost 0, the cylinder face would rub against the back of the forcing cone after the gun got just a little dirty. It also was not particularly accurate. I had the gap corrected and the gun instantly became a tack driver. What I really love about the JM is the interchangeable front sight. I've replaced the gold bead Patridge on mine with a fiber optic sight that I just love. I've also gotten used to the Miculak grips which were too slippery for my taste at first. Now, I find them to be extremely comfortable.

I really believe that the 25 and 625 series of revolvers may well be the best thing that Smith has ever produced.
