I've never had a revolver so I don't know much about them but I've been wanting a 2 1/2" 686 for alittle awhile now and was wondering what the difference(s) are between a -1, -2, -3, -4, -5 models?
Which is the most favorable and why?
Is there one that is better than another or one that is more prone to "problems" or to stay away from in favor of one of the other dash models?
Welcome to the forum. If it is a 686, they are all good. I collect the 686-5 myself, alot like the -4 which is the last without MIM parts (which are good parts) and the -6 and up has the lock whick is easy to take care of. So go for the one that looks right and feels good to you. If you don't know what to check for on the older ones then go for a new one and have fun.
I really love the 586/686 guns. I have been looking for a stubbie for a while,I have never heard anything bad about them, everyone I ever talked to that owns one has only good things to say about them, even the new ones with the IL. You cant go wrong with one, they are that good.
I've heard and read the same about them. I was wondering what the differences between the diferent dash models were since I can't tell and just want to know what those differences are. And what makes one dash model more desirable than another.
The dash numbers are engineer changes at the factory.
S&W had a recall on all L frames in 1987 including the
M686. S&W will fix it for free, even now. You can tell if
it has been fixed, there will be a "M" stamped on the yoke.
