I am looking at a 586 over stamped M. I would like to know what the M could mean and value ? The gun is in excellent condition with box and docs.

That's correct. IIRC, it had something to do with the bushing and firing pin causing sticking in SOME (few?) of them shooting certain 357 Mag ammo, where the pin would stick in the primer and tie up the gun. I think M = "modified" (hence improved/fixed).

Here's mine:

I've got a model 581 going back to the factory today for the rework. MSgt G, how long did it take S&W to turn it around?

I agree with those above about the hammer nose/bushing mod. It seems like I read on here a while back that a Smith rep told someone who called that this problem was specific to soft primers, specifically, if I recall correctly, Federal primers / Federal factory ammo.

I have two 586 no dash 4 inch revolvers one with the M and the other without. No box or papers but I paid $350 for the first and $320 for the second.

Thanks guys for the help. Now at least I know what the M stands for. Now as to value. I wish I could find a 586 for 300 to 400. What is the going rate for a 98% 6 inch with box and docs in your area???

1HAWKEYE: Thanks for the reply. $550 is the asking price. I am going to look at it tomorrow. I must want one badley to drive 2 hours one way to look. In my area mint 586's are hard to come by. I have been looking a long time so I hope this one is mint.

The M meant that it was modified by either the factory or a S&W trained armorer. I was one of those, primarily for LE. It required replacement of the hammer nose bushing, and hammer nose. It involved fitting these parts, and chamfering the bushing to factory specs. I still have the parts, gauges, and such to do it. We were paid by S&W to do it. The guns would lock up solid with the right kind of ammo.
I never experienced the problem, and we all carried L Frames. This was supposed to solve the problem. Final step was to stamp the M on the gun. Hope that helps. RG
