It's a engineering change to the original design. For example to add the lock would be -2, etc.

Does this mean there is no lock on the -2?

Not necessarily. My 442-2 doesn't have a lock. Some of the -2s do have the lock, and some do not.

I just bought a 442-2, came with 2 keys and has the key hole on the left side, so looks like mine is the lock version. Should S&W had some kind of identifier on these ( 442-2 ) for the lock/unloock versions? Well I waited for 2 months for this one to come in and it was actually on order for over a year but the guy that ordered it could not be contacted so they let me have it. I have read the lock has malfunctioned on some and actually locked up, anyone know if there is any truth to this?

different sku for the two. The 442-2 IL model is 162810. The current production no lock 442 (which is also a -2) is sku 150544. I believe the 642 variants also have a different sku.
