Need some wood for my 617
I want to replace the rubber Hogue on my new 617 with some wood but I can't decide what to get. I like the shape of the Hogue and one option is the same grip but wood. I'm also looking at the Ahrends rb with the finger grooves. I know the Hogue would work with my DS-10 speedloader, and the Ahrends looks like it would too.
Decisions, decisions...

Nill is another option. I have the very same grip on my model 18. The handling is fabulous.

If you want an exact replica in wood, just buy Hogue monogrips in wood. Check out their website. The selection of wood available is impressive as is their options to help personalize them, such as checkering and accent lines. Their website is Hogue, Inc. | www.getgrip.com | The finest gun grips, rifle stocks and accessories

I did not care for the finger groove grips, they did not fit my hand. I have large hands and it takes target grips for me to be able to comfortably hold a S&W. I found a set of well worn, smooth presentation grips and tried them. They have have been on there ever since. My 617 is a square butt gun.

I hate rubber grips. I have some Hogue wood grips on my 686. You might like them. I also have a M66 RB with Hogue grips. Don

I loved Kim Ahrends' 'Square Conversion Grips', both with and without fg's... until I tried his 'retro targets', that is. See them on my N-frame 627 Pro in cocobolo with the factory finish and on my 4" 617 K-frame where the 'retro targets', ordered in unfinished cocobolo, were finished here in a homebrew penetrating oil finish. Probably not a good candidate for a real kicker, they do feel quite good on my 625MG in .45 Colt.
Here is the square conversion non fg grips on my L-frame 696 and the 617 with the retro targets for comparison.
And, finally, another K-frame - a 4" 64 - with rounded Hogues in goncalo alves and fg's compared to the retro targets on the 617.
I hope this helps!

Well, I'd pretty well settled on the Ahrends, but after shooting it yesterday with the factory Hogue, it felt so good I think I'll just leave it alone for now (plus I need to save my pennies as I found out I'm going to the NRA annual convention with my granddad )

Stainz, your photos helped me a bunch. After viewing yours I too will go with the Ahrends 'retro targets'.
I called their contact number earlier today and the gentleman I spoke with was extra courteous and helpful.
Thanks for helping me decide !!

There are a lot of really great looking options in this thread! I just got a 617 and I need to get rid of those ugly (IMO) rubber grips ASAP.

Same question here. Does he have a website? I can't find it with google.

Stainz,
Those are great photographs. Is there any real difference in feel/concealability between the two grips, or is the difference mainly cosmetic? Also, I do a lot of one-handed shooting. Would one pair seem to you to be particularly more suited than the other for that?
Thanks.
