Purchased a S&W Model 610-2 from a fellow forum member.

The serial number is CER26XX, with the product code being 103571 and the Special Order number being 4444.

When was this manufactured, and what does the product and special order numbers mean?

Thanks.

Without more information, such as barrel length, it's a bit hard to give you much beyond the year of the change. For the 610-2, that years is 1998, so yours is 1998 or newer.

If it has either the4 or 6 1/2 inch barrel, it will have the interchangable front sight, which makes changing the front sight a simple matter of pushing it toward the rear of the gun and tipping it out front first.

If it's a 3 inch barrel, it's one of 300 specials run for hte distributor Lew Horton and one of the most desirable versions of the 610.

This got my curiosity. I just went and measured my LH 610 and it's 3" right on.

The 6 digit product code specifically identifies a configuration.

For example, product code 103571 shows as a model 610 revolver with a 4" barrel, stainless steel construction, full under lug, adjustable rear sight, gold bead front sight, drilled and tapped for scope mounting and an unfluted cylinder weighing in at 50 ounces. This product code shows as having been produced from 2001-2003 so it would have spanned the -2 and -3 engineering revisions.

The Spec Ord number traditionally shows the date of manufacture. The first digit being the year and the remaining three digits being the Julian day. I have seen a few that break this rule, like yours.

You mention that your barrel measurs 3 7/8." This is not unusual as the 4" is nominal. 1/8" variation is quite common.

re: "1/8" variation is quite common."

It is hard to believe such a wide variation could occur in a product that includes other parts fitting to .001" tolerance.

You mean like the 444th day of 1994? :D
