HELP! 686 Side plate replacement
I attempted to 'plug' the Hillary Hole today and realized I was in over my head. After removing the side plate and removing/replacing the leaf spring in the handle, I attempted to replace the side plate and encountered resistance. I don't think I did any damage. Are all of the parts in their correct position? (Please see attached photos) What do I need to do to replace the side plate?

If you had the mainspring out, you were almost to the "hole". With right hand, hold the trigger all the way back (as in fired position). With right hand, ease the hammer off the stud.
To replace the side plate, the hammer block (the loose part) must be in all the way up. I'll hold the gun up side down (hammer pointed down) in my left hand, so the hammer block stays down (or in the up position).
Then ease the sideplate back on.
I'm sure others will resond.

What he said about the hammer block safety.....all the way up. Next make sure the top edge of the side plate goes in the top curve below the hammer, you will note a lip that must go under the frame edge first before the plate is lowered to it's normal position. HTH

The top of the side plate has a lip on it, (top right side) so I angle the plate in on top first, the ease it down. Snug fit, then gently rescrew it in.

Thanks.
Never thought of the upside down position as you describe it.
I;ll try that at home this evening.
What I did try was to put the sideplate flat on the tabletop with its outer side down, placed the hammer block in its groove and then tried bringing the gun down onto the plate. Needless to say, it didn't work.

We have all been there at one time or another. Usually the first time we took a side plate off and ran into the same problem you did.

Dang! You guys are good. I struggled for 30 minutes before reaching for help--this forum. The upside down trick did it. Many thanks.
