serial # and spec ord...some confusion

i have a 686 with original box. someone is selling their 686 with the original box....both have the same product code
my serial # prefix, AYD...spec ord, 8062.
theirs.....AZB, 8057

earlier serial #, produced later???
is it common for this to occur??

Ordinal Dates

The "spec. ord." numbers are the ordinal ship dates.

8057 = February 26, 1988
8062 = March 2, 1988
 
Serial # is assigned to the frame when it is made, the spec order code denotes when the finished product was ready to ship.

Is that for real?? Or are you playing on my ignorance? I have
a corner market on dumb, so I can't tell which is which!
Please reassure me, one way or the other. I had no idea that
S&W would use such a dating system.

Common! S&W did not use serial numbers in order. I have seen two pistols with the same product code but the THDxxxx one was 1102 and the TFMxxxx was 1113

It is for real. But...with everything S&W there are exceptions!

I have a pistol with a Spec Ord: 4444 and not even on a leap year are there 444 days.:) Also, when is says SPECIAL in features, the Spec Ord number is not a julian date.
