586-3 Round Butt
I have a 586-3 S&W 357, 4" round-butt, adjustable rear sight, with a Hogue mono grip. I've had it about 20 years. Great gun. I know it's rare. Can't seem to find much on it. Anyone know what it's worth? Looks like this.

This gun can't be that rare. It would be worth a fortune. Would be nice.

The Mod 586 is the blue version of the 686 stainless. I don't think they make the 586 anymore but that would not make it rare. I don't know how many were made in RB. I had a 586 no dash 4" barrel with the square butt, nice shooting gun that I recently sold for around $500.

I don't think I would sell it. Had it to long. I can't believe no one here knows more about it. Maybe someone will come along.

I've got one just like yours. Purchased in 1990. I know it was a special run due to the round butt with Hogue's and matte finish. All I could find was an old post on this forum. See smithnut's reply.

With 2500 made I wouldn't call it rare, in another 75 years it may be rare. Rare would be if only 250 where made, and that is the ones you want to buy.

I love it
Nice, now you have given me another S&W to add to my "need" list
With all the hi-speed tactical-target grips out there, the K/L frame round butt, with stock factory Magnas and a T-Grip is my hands down favorite.Fits my hands perfectly, in fact I don't really look for a square butt Smith if a RB version exists..........I even sent a "thank you" e-mail to S&W for making all of the newer K and L frames RB, no one replied though
If I had that 586 those hideous Hogues would be gone and a set of RB Magna Targets or straight Magnas would be on it within 5 minutes of me getting home with it. IMO putting Hogues on a RB S&W is a waste of a good RB grip frame.

Depends on where you are, in Ohio I would put $750 on it, because it is hard to find. Everyone that has one holds on to it .

The only thing that hurts the value is that the new 686's are also round butt, someone who really wants one can just get a new 4" 686 or have a used 586 "round-butted" by a skilled revolversmith. I know Pinnacle will convert a square to a round butt for $95.00, so if someone wasn't interested in a collectible, a decent used 4" 586 for around $500 + about $100 for the work can put you in at $600 ballpark for a round butt 586.

I don't see how you get it that with it being compare to a stainless that is made every day to a blued round butt 586 that only 2500 was made. That wouldn't be fair to the 586, its not rare, but it is hard to find one in good shape. Plus if you cut the frame (which I have done myself) to a round butt with drop the valve to half, plus you are talking about a reblue job on top of that.

Oh yeah, I was thinking in terms of a "shooter" which is the reason I would want a 4" round butt 586. In terms of buying one to put away in a safe, I'll leave that to the collectors.
Picking up a tight but holster beat 586 for $400 and having it round butted would be no real crime against humanity, it's something I would like to do.

I have two 4 inch M586 square butts and love the handling characteristics.
A friend has a M586 4 inch round-butt exactly as described here. I like it's handling better than mine.
I passed up one a couple of gunshows ago at about $575.00. I shouldn't have done that.
I too am thinking of buying a stainless M686 (older, non-lock) and round butting it, as well as de-horning the hammer. It won't have much resale but it would be a fantastic revolver to me.
I respectfully suggest that if you like its characteristics that you never sell it. It will not devalue and it will eventually be worth more than the standard models since it already is.

If you do a older 686 the valve won't go down on it, they made a bunch that were round butt in the -3 and -4 in the short 2 1/2" barrels. Do it and have fun. Most will think that it had been rebarreled.

Thanks Bullseye,
what do you mean by, "...the valve won't go down on it."?

I just paid $350 for a 6" 586 in incredibly good condition, but I think I got a steal. After watching the local market here in Michigan for around 6 months I'd say $500 is a fair price up here for one.
