When looking up the serial number of the M66-2 3-inch gun I just bought in my SCSW, I noted that these were made special order on more than one occasion for "RSR."

What does this stand for? "Regional Sales Representative" comes to mind. Or is this an organization? A distributor?

Also, my revolver's serial number is AHL89XX. I can't find that prefix in the index. Any idea why?

Thanks.

RSR is a distributor....have several shipping locations; I think main HQ is in FL.

RSR as noted is a S&W distributor that has S&W make up an exclusive for them. Lew Horton, Ellett Bros., Sports South and Davidsons are among the list as well that have exclusives done periodically. I'm sure there are others that do it - depends on how deep their pockets are when doing an exclusive as to what S&W will listen to.

Above responses are correct, but I just wanted to point out that they are not limited to just S&W products. If they have something you are looking for your local shop should be familiar with them, but be aware that oftentimes to get an exclusive or limited item there may be a minimum purchase amount or quantity in order for them to get it. If the shop doesn't order from RSR normally they may not want to meet those rquirements.

RSR was a fine distributor to deal with when I had my FFL. They were very prompt and did not have any problems dealing with small-time, local shops out of the owners' homes. They treated me well.

They had distribution-centers in NV, FL, NY and WI, at the time I held my FFL. I do not know where they have them now. They did get special-runs from S&W made and they did offer them to small-time dealers, too. They listened to their customers and had runs of good products made for them.

I believe they are called "RSR Group" now. Google them and you will see how big they are.

Some of the best guns I ever handled came after being buzzed through the door at their East Colonial Dr location. RSR had my FFL on file and it was just a 15 mi drive from the house. I'd go to get a gun for a customer and the counter guy would have this and that, put it on the account. The attitude changed when they moved over to Metric Dr, less interested in the small FFL. I remember the 3" 66's along with $199 Model 520's and $189 MKIII Troopers. And $69 SKS's. And....RSR

Regarding your model 66's SN prefix, the table in the back of the SCSW appears to have been constructed from known ship dates of guns, and (I'm guessing) was not meant to be all-inclusive.

For what it is worth, the AHL prefix is one from the 3" model 66 run in 1985.
