I have a 640-1 and the front sight has been dinged. I see that the sight is pinned- how do I take the damaged sight out? What replacements are out there ? Big dot or brass bead? Gold bead ?

I have replaced the front-sights on my two non-M&P models with XS Sights with the "regular-dot", though the BigDot is available. I like its white-outline with the advantage of the tritium-tube for low-light conditions. Of course, this is just my two-cents worth.......

I had my friendly gun-smith do them for me and it took him all of ten-minutes to knock out the pin, fit and install the new sight and drill it for the pin installation.

I had a XS Big Dot on my 640-1. I didn't like it because it didn't match up well with the square rear sight channel and I could never get a reliable consistent sight alignment. I currently have a Tru Glo fiber optic, which I'm not entirely satisfied with either. To see the whole F/O dot, you can't have the sights lined up properly (i.e. level top of front with top of rear). I'm thinking about having the rear sight channel milled a little deeper. I'm also considering if I have the rear sight channel milled, maybe I'll just go with the "U" shape like my M&P 340 and an XS standard dot.

When you say drill the new sight for the pin..? Doesn't the XS sight come pre drilled?

Is there a Brass bead sight available??

Dogmann - I believe a competent gunsmith could fabricate whatever type of sight you would like. The key is to find a competent gunsmith, that won't charge the equivalent of the value of the firearm, and won't take a year to do the work.

No, it does not. Nor, do the other brands I have purchased such as Meprolight. The slot cut in the frame of the revolver is not consistent and is of varied depth. The "tail" on the sight is filed or ground to fit the sight-channel it is being fitted to. Then, the 'smith or whoever is installing it drills a hole for the pin to be fitted into. It is preferred to drill half-way through one side and then half-way through the other, using the pin's hole in the frame.

I'm going to attempt this , so can anyone tell me
the punch size I should use?
The pin size?
And which way do I drive the pin out?

This on a 640-1......

Drill-bit size #54 (.054) and maybe start with punch .050 in size. Punch it out either way, as one drills the same size hole into the sight-tab from each side. One can use the same pin, if you are careful.

SDM Fabricating makes a gold-bead front-sight for S&W.

I recently performed this install on my 640-1 and 242. Big dot tritiums are the way to go. Just go slow. A little bit of filing is all it took for the sights to drop all the way down into the groove. Then simply drill from both sides. Not difficult, just take your time.

These were the cheapest I could find when I was searching for the sights a few months ago.

Here's what it will look like with the XS. FWIW, my local gunsmith said it was tough removing the factory sight. Apparently, it can be a chore or it simply comes out with no resistance. I'm very pleased. Good luck.
