Support hand vs trigger hand and why? Sorry if this has been done before. I'm just curious on people's reasons.

Oh yea.. forgot to put my own vote. I used to use the trigger hand, but lately been using my support hand more because I hate messing with my dominant hand when shooting. I use my trigger hand to de-cock the hammer though.

single action

i am right handed and i just use the right thumb, since since i am firing single action there is no hurry on double action revolvers, now on single action revolvers i sometimes use my left thumb so as not to have to shift my grip as much, just what is comfortable to me.

If you are using both hands and have the proper grip with the trigger hand, cocking with the support hand disturbs your hold less.

When shooting DA, I use the shooting hand, but when using SA's I will sometimes use the support hand if I want to shoot in a 'rapid' fire mode.

I shoot single action's with both hands and I agree with comment #3.

For 38 an 44 mag/spl I use trigger hand cuz grip not so critical. For my 454 Casull use support hand thumb cuz grip is tighter and once I have correct grip don't want to constantly readjust.

I am right handed and use my left thumb. As stated above it does not disturb my grip as much.

I do both, depending on whether shooting one or two handed, precision shooting or rapid fire. Obviously, shooting SA one handed, one most naturally cocks hammer with thumb of hand holding revolver.

When shooting for smallest groups, two-handed, I cock hammer with thumb on trigger hand because it disturbs my grip less.

When shooting a SA revolver rapid fire, two-handed, I cock hammer with thumb of non-trigger finger hand.

FYI, I routinely practice shooting revolvers with both hands, SA, DA, precision shooting, rapid fire shooting, one-handed and two-handed.

Because of these life-long habits, I did not respond to the over simplified poll.

I agree with that. The .44's recoil enough so that I can usually have the support hand thumb cocking the gun seemingly before it comes completely back down out of recoil.

when two-handed I'll use the thumb on the support hand. When single-handed, my other hand is not used at all.

If I'm taking a single action shot, then usually it's because I want and aimed, accurate and carefully placed round. This will find me using a two handed grip and it's more comfortable for me to use my support hand to cock the hammer.
