L.E. Agency marked guns?
Do these agency marked revolvers have more collector value than non agency guns or is it up to the collector?I have a nice 686 no dash marked Oakland P.D. and I am thinking about the purchase of 2 3rd gen S&W autos that are agency marked as well. One being a .45 and the other a dao 9mm.Both are stainless and in great shape. Thanks guys!

Opinion is divided on their desirability, at least as far as marked ones go. Some don't want a "defaced" gun, while others rather like a little indisputable history. As far as value goes, generally they take a bit of a hit on the open market.
However, I think the nice thing about former law enforcement handguns is that you can lower your condition standards somewhat and still deem them collectible. Typical faults are obvious holster wear and replaced grips, but some may show signs of very hard use, or even neglect.

The value of LE stamped or verified guns tend to be specific to the particular agency, or disposal/destruction policies of same. NYPD guns are collectable, but those from smaller agencies are harder sells except to a LE collector. Recent ex-FBI guns have tended to be destroyed (i.e, model 1076s) so they are more valuable when available.

There are certainly many more of some specific agencies' cast-offs in circulation than others - a good example is the seemingly large number of ex-Detroit PD revolvers (and pistols, for that matter) in the marketplace.
There's also a geographic aspect to the collectibility of these - guns from your state or region will tend to command more interest than ones from more distant jurisdictions.

Agency marked guns are not that common. In all of the LE organizations where I was issued a firearm, both long guns and handguns, none were ever marked.
Many agencies, including big ones like New York and Chicago, required new officers to purchase their own handgun, albeit usually through the union or department-approved supplier. As these were privately owned weapons, none would be marked as department property.

The one agency I worked for that issued sidearms (S&W 39-2's, which pretty much dates me) did not mark them in any way.

As a retar... err retired, yah retired cop, I love em.
I always wonder what that gun has "seen" and where it has been.
I have a marked 1938 Colt Police Positive from my old dept, I paid $195 for it and have been offered much, much more by fellow officers.
So the value of them is dependent upon who wants them.
Oh, marked ones from my dept are very rare and I even know the name of the Ofc who carried it, I got it from his son.

The two 3rd gen's I'm considering are a 4506-1 from Tempe PD and a 5946 from Memphis PD and it has the agency emblem on the slide and what I think are badge numbers above the model number on the frame also. They are marked $450 for the .45 and $375 for the 9mm,but I think I can get them considerably cheaper as they have been in the case for a while.Any Idea if they put badge number on their guns(Memphis PD)?They are marked MPD3339 for example. Thanks!

As far as being a "collector" firearm, I would dare to say. But one has to think if they have a LE trade in, what history goes along with it. I have a 686 no dash that was one, but it is not marked. It shoots probably the best of any I own. Most LE firearms are carried alot and shot little, usally once or twice a year to re-qualify. They can usally be found at decent prices too. I wouldn't hesitate to own a few more trade in LE firearms.

Well,I thought about that, but on one side of the frame there is
MPD and 4 digits following and then on the other side there is MPD again followed by 4 different digits. When I was a reserve deputy our Sheriff's office would put your badge number on the gun and my bro-n-law's State issue Glock 22's serial # starts of w/ AST(Alabama State Troopers)followed by his badge number.

I have MPD's that were marked with badge on both on slides, but only one has a 4 digit number, I also have a SW rev marked MPD without any number. I will have to check with a friend about his MPD's

If it is badge numbers, it should be possible to find out who they were issued to, also what do deptartments do when someone gets a promotion or just switches badge numbers for any reason, do they attempt to remove them or just stamp more on the gun.

Since I live in Washington I am into Washington State Patrol marked guns. I also have a 38/44 that I am sure is WSP but the markings was removed when it was traded in. I have a M28 and a 66 that are WSP marked as well as a Beretta 92 and a set of consecutive #ed Win model 12 Riot guns.
