I made a brief visit to a nearby gunstore for some blackpowder supplies this afternoon. As normal I looked at all the guns in stock..and these guys mostly deal with shotguns of all grades..and hunting rifles..but have a bit of everything on hand from a few milsurps to a few handguns.

Anyhow..in the used handgun case was a 586 looking S&W..but it didn't look quite right. Had the lady get it out for me..and it was a .32mag K frame..couldn't quite make out the model number under the yoke..but think it said Mod 16-2(light was bad and I was in a hurry).

The gun is a spitting image of a 4" 586..heavy underlug barrel and all. Had what looked to be smooth walnut finger-groove Hogue or Ahrend style grips with no S&W logo.

So just what was I looking at this afternoon?

Are the grips original on that particular model?

It is more than likely a Model 16-4 since it looks like the 586/686 L frames. They came with finger groove grips, but as far as I know the S&W emblems were on them.

It would be a 16-4. The original stocks were finger groove smooth Goncalo Alves combat type, with medallions. What you saw were not original factory stocks.

Did it look like these except with a 4" barrel?

The middle one is a Model 16-4 which appears to be what you were looking at. They only made 8,800 of them over about a four year period and the 4" versions are harder to find. They are chambered in .32 H&R Magnum but will fire .32 S&W Longs and .32 S&W cartridges too. Recently some folks have been sending their cylinders to Hamilton Bowen to have them converted to fire the .327 Federal Magnum, which is a hot round. The 16-4s are sweet guns and I'd jump on that one if the price was right, even with the aftermarket grips.

Ehh..I bet it had medallions..'cause the grips were just like that.

Yes..that's the revolver. They wanted $500-something for it.

I was in something of a hurry..a guy was on a ladder working on the light fixtures right behind me...I looked at it and moved on.

Wish it would've been $400-something!

In good condition, $500-something is a steal for a 4" 16-4. If you pass on it, I'm sure some other folks here might be interested and I bet it would be gone within 24 hours if you post the shop name.

Today there was one for sale in the Classifieds. You might want to look it up.

However if it were me and my credit card could handle it I would be at that gunstore at least 30 minutes before they open up.

I think "$500.00 something" is a cheap price for one of those.........

Jeez!..Whats a decent Mod 16-4 4" sell for?

I may have to go back Monday and stick it on my credit card!

16-4's generally sell for $800 - $1000, depending on condition and whether they have the box and papers. Their predecessors, the K-32 and 16 thru 16-3, go for about 3 times that. I would be at the shop in the morning and not wait until Monday. Pictured top to bottom: 4" 16-4, 6" 16-4, pre-16 K-32.

Store ain't open on weekends..

I looked at the Mod 16 in the classifieds..and would say the revolver in the store is comparable condition-wise.

Yes..wish I would have looked at it further than just a quickie.

Now I'm starting to sweat!!

I know that feeling. I'm sure it will be there on Monday if its meant to be yours. But that's a great price on a great gun. They are sweet shooters for sure.

Made from 1989 to '92...4, 6, and 8 3/8 inch..6" only in final year of production..not really listed in my latest 'Gun Trader's Guide'...values are rather bogus in 'the guide' anyhow.

I sort of remember this model from the 1990's..but cannot say I've ever seen one in real life until yesterday.

I've got ammo on hand in .32 S&W long and a few Mags(Federal hollowpoints)..Like the caliber

I've just bought a couple guns I really didn't need recently(Rossi .44 mag carbine..Uberti Dragoon)..need doesn't stop me from doing anything..

I thought the funny looking '586' was interesting enough to risk dangling electrical wires from the ceiling to briefly gawk at..I put it back because I thought the price was too high! Believe it was $580 some odd bucks on the tag...also had a P08 artillery(surely refinished..no straw..didn't even ask to inspect)...some of the handgun's price tags stated 'includes box'..don't remember if the S&W's tag stated that or not. Seriously wish I had paid much more than idle 'another overpriced Smith' attention to the cool little revolver!

I got the cash...but must clear with my lady(who likely won't say no)...

Would've bought it yesterday if the price would have been $400-$450-ish.

Will most likely bee-bop back to the store and buy it Monday morning..but If I have a change of heart..will figure a way to get one of you guys into it.

These are idle ramblings from a guy that wishes he knew what he wanted to do...and really wasn't planning on buying another firearm (unless I crack and buy a shooter-grade Krag I know of).....I'm so conflicted!

If they have it at $580 I would probably offer $500 or so to get things rolling, but even at $580 you can't go wrong. And if you change your mind later, you can probably make a nice profit for your trouble. The best advice I ever got concerning the 16-4 came from forum member peyton, who said "when you find one you buy it".

If you like the .32 caliber you will love the 16-4. My 4" is very accurate and balances really well. I have a 17-6 4" and 586 4" for the full lug trifecta

I'm going to go get the Mod 16 first thing in the morning.

I imagine it will still be there...the store doesn't really sell that many handguns. The little Smith looked like it had set idle in the same spot for sometime.

I bought the Model 16-4 this morning...Does have aftermarket grips..Hogue wood grip..mono-grip or whatever..I've got the rubber version on a Mod 14.

Good points: The blue is good excepting a wear spot on the bottom of the barrel and a couple minor dinks in the top edge of the barrel rib. Mechanicaly fine. Price...the light must have been really bad Friday(lights were out in the store)..'cause the price was $495..and they wouldn't dicker.

Bad points..does have the aftermarket grip..which I actually like...the front sight blade I suspect has been changed from a partridge to a ramp. I say this because the gun's blue is really good..but the blade is patina brown..pin looks to have been driven too. Front sideplate screw was about to fall out!..No ammo..anywhere I looked..none at the local Wal Mart..None at the store I got the Mod 16 at(though they normaly stock it they said)

Other good points..Shoots perfect..I had part of a box of Federal 85gr hp..and some .32 S&W longs...excellent shooter.

I'll have to get some pics going..but I piled my computer up at lunchtime..and I'm risking my life posting this now using my wife's computer!

At $495 you can afford to put some nice grips and the correct front sight on the gun and still have a good deal. Oh, and those "dings" you mentioned, that just means you can shoot it all you want with no worries.

I have had my 16-4 (6" barrel) since they came out. It is one of my favorite revolvers of all time. I shoot it a good bit. I cast my own bullets and like a Group Buy 100 gr Keith cast bullet.

I would pick up a $500 shooter in a New York Minute, would probably send the cylinder out to allow .327 mag on a shooter too. Good score.
