617 4 inch 10 shot Finally!
A while back I purchased a Model 17-8, 6 inch, 10 shot, which I love, but so does my wife! I never get to shoot it-she has all the 10 round fun. I've been searching all over for a very nice condition used model 617 (any dash-I don't give a hoot about IL or MIM) 10 shot. They go for crazy money anymore on the net and LGS's price scratched-up tackle box anchors the same way.
Looked at a few new ones in various places, however all of them had either canted barrels or finish issues. Not willing to pay $725-$750 plus tax for a gun that obviously needs a trip back to Springfield.
Found this one today, a 617-6 for $570 plus T& BC. Not a single scratch or "bubba gunsmith" mark. It was quite dirty. A good cleaning and a pair of S&W Combat Stocks made it look better than new. CMM prefix dates it to July 2004.
Now- time to list the factory rubbers in the classifieds.....
I love to shoot then rounds. I DON'T like cleaning ten holes!! Looks darn cool though.

Congratulations. That is an outstanding price you paid for that gun. 4 inchers generally for a lot more.

617 ten shot range report
Well, my wife and I sent a couple hundred rounds offhand downrange out of the 617 ten shot today with great results. The revolver is a fantastic, smooth and accurate firearm. Can't wait to try it off sandbags. Really nice balance with the 4 inch full underlug barrel.

Good choice. Bought my 617 4" several years ago - only complaint was that it took several months for my LGS to find one. Great gun and lots of fun.

You did well. I prefer no-lock, non-MIM six-shooters and have been looking for a nice no-dash or -1 4" 617 to go with my 6" no-dash for some time. Every nice one I found was over $700 and a shop in Kentucky has an unfired one in its box for a cool grand. Last week, I saw one on GunBroker that even had nicely-figured checkered Goncalo Alves target stocks for an opening bid of $569 or a "Buy Now" price of $639. I figured it would only take a few bids before someone would just hit the "Buy Now" button, so I went right to it.
Below are three photos lifted from the sellers GB ad.

Does S&W still make the 4" 10-round 617? I only saw the 6" listed on thier website.

Yes they still sell them and I doubt if they would drop them from their line as they are very popular in the 4 and 6 inch barrel lengths.

Nice choice. Next thing to add are some DS-10 speed loaders. Really helps cut down waisted time at the range. You can load them up while there is a break and be ready for shooting time.
