I have my eyes on a new classic model 25. But I need to know if it will handle +P ammo. I cannot find this information on S&W's website.

Does anyone know?

Are you talking 45 Colt? Personally, I don't shoot +P in my Smith 625 MG, but some people do. At best, you'll wear your gun out faster. At worst, you will damage the gun and hurt yourself. I think this is unlikely, but I don't want to risk it. The ammo does usually say "Ruger and Dan Wesson only"...

Yes, a model 25 is chambered in .45 colt. Buffalo Bore ammunition states that its ammo is to be used for guns designed for +P ammunition only, rather than stating the particular manufacturers and models.

I have a Freedom Arms model 97 in .45 Colt. Do you think I should be afraid to use ammo in it that was advertised for Rugers or Wessons only?

Use the proper tool for the job at hand. It would be prudent to not subject your S&W 25 to a steady diet of +P ammo. That what FAs and Rugers are for. As Linebaugh points out, the S&W will take these loads [32,000 psi] safely, but such loads will greatly shorten the life of your gun.

Gunnotes...Smith & Wesson Mod 25-5

I would be VERY hesitant about shooting Buffalo Bore's +P ammo in any S&W, based on the ballistics they publish their +P loads are particularly and singularly HOT. Looking at their 45LC +P loads produces ballistics that would be considered at the high end for the 44 Magnum. I simply don't understand how a 45LC could produce these numbers and be within SAAMI specs for a +P loading of that caliber. Perhaps SAAMI has a wider allowance for over pressure with the 45LC but going from around 950 fps for standard pressure to over 1500 fps for a +P seems to be a much larger increase than what I've seen for most +P ammo's. It should also be noted that most of their +P loads have disclaimers that state they should only be used in a heavy frame Ruger or Freedom Arms revolver.

I'd also suggest that you carefully read all of that article that JT linked to. Lots of good info there.

Thanks, that's the information I was looking for. I asked my question in kind of a lazy way, but I would probably never buy factory ammo for the thing. I already reload for .45 Colt, but all of my reloading manuals list only loads for old Colts or Colt replicas, or loads for Rugers/Thompson Centers only. And I usually don't go to max on those, even for my FA revolver.

So I was really wanting to know if something like a 300 grn bullet with about 12.5 grns Blue Dot would be safe to fire in a model 25. Sounds like it would be.
