I have a question for all my S&W Forum friends. Last week I found one of my grail guns. In my many years of collecting I have never seen another one in this configuration anywhere in Canada. The pictures are the seller's, the gun won't be in my possession until early in the New Year. Some questions- would this revolver be a Lew Horton Special Edition, circa 1985 or 1986? Any idea of total production? I appreciate all comments, my SC of S&W doesn't say a lot about this model.

Congrats! It really doesn't matter if it's a Lew Horton or not. They're just a distrubtor of firearms. You have or soon will have in your posession one fine 3" 657! It looks great. I absolutely love mine but quickly changed out the grips as them pretty combats stink for shooting full powered magnums. They don't fit my fingers and will draw blood within 2 cylinders. Like most other 3" revolvers it is very accurate and a great field, camping or hiking revolver. Carry mine in a Lobo pancake and loaded with 210 gr. Speer Gold Dots, which will do a number on about any 4 legged animals in NA. Load up some hard cast heavies or some Buffalo Bores and you'll be pretty well protected even against bears for a handgun if you can hit it at 30 mph while its charging you:). I carry a 12 gauge with my 57 out in bear country. 57 is a last chance weapon.

Do believe the numbers were around 5k but not positive on that. When they come up for sale they go quickly and for big bucks. I don't shoot many heavies, but love a LSWC over 7.5 grains of unique to keep the recoil down and let it stay tight.

Congrats and welcome to the 3" 657 club! Merry Christmas too!

You can send an email with the model and serial # to them at: [email protected].

If they can, they will confirm if it's one of theirs, their records only go back to 1985.

This is a reply I got from Gunhacker, a member here.

They emailed me back next buisness day.

It may or may not have come through Lew Horton Distibutors, though it is not a "Lew Horton Exclusive". There were close to 5500 made in 1986-1987.
The Lew Horton Exclusive Special Edition 657 with 3 inch barrel has the full underlug and 150 were made in 1998.

You're getting yourself a nice revolver. I like to use 220 grain cast SWC at 1000fps and under with mine.

rick,
i have a local guy who is a genius on the model 657 guns.he knows everything about them.of course you will have to send it to us,and he will have to examine the gun.alos he is slow, and backed up,so it might be awhile before you get it back.lol nice gun friend

As others have noted - these were not a special run for one distributor. These were regular production.

Here is how one lettered from S&W...
