I'm working on a winter project right now that involves fitting my 6" blued steel Model 586 with a shorter barrel for carry and am considering a 3" stainless replacement. If anyone has been down this "mix-n-match" path before, post your pics and let's see your blue and stainless creations!

I lost my particular pix, but I did the same thing with a Model 38-2 and a model 640, but only the cylinders and yokes. There are a couple of others on here that have done something similar. The Model 38 was produced in "two-tone" as a special run for the Michigan State Police, but one can build his own cross-breed. Nowadays...the modern term may be "duo-tone", or something sounding scientific.

I have also heard about shooters that like to use the carbon steel blued cylinder for range shooting. I rather think one may be splitting-hairs over the slight difference in coefficient-of-expansion between carbon steel and stainless steel that may affect accuracy.....but to each his own.

I like the idea of making a gun your own.

I did it with a Ruger GP100!

It was cool at first but never grew on me, I can see myself letting this one go soon....

I did what NOTREDAME did with a 38-2 and a 640 just to see what it looked like. My intentions were to make the 38-2 all non-blued metal, so I ordered a stainless cylinder assembly and yoke. That will only leave the barrel blued-steel, but I do not want to risk changing the barrel on an alloy gun....especially a Model 38. I put the 640 back like it was suppose to be and just changed the cylinder and yoke on the Model 38, which resembles stantheman's GP.

I get all sorts of questions every time I pull the gun out in a crowd. I tell them it was a special run from S&W and mine is a "one-of-one":D. Nobody has offered me enough money for it, nor has anybody bit-on the one-of-one story either.

Pictures attached. I put mud-flaps and fender-skirts on my 38-2.
