It would have to be the 696.
Why? Well, because I've had one for about 15 years.
The best reason though is the obvious......It's a .44 Special.
I think that's self explanatory.

296 or 696 because they start with a 4.

It depends on what YOU are going to do with it.
I'd get the 696 and never look back. It shoots a cartridge that's a proven man stopper, recoil is mild and it's made out of steel.
That and the fact that it's highly collectible.
Can't be said of the scandium revolver.
And... If you shoot a magnum in the scandium piece.... better prepare yourself, it's a handful.

Magnum rounds aren't bad at all in the 386NG, especially with those big grips.

I agree the 386 may be a bit of a handful, but how is it not collectible?
I love collecting, and I have been drooling for a 386ng since I held one at a gun show.

I've never had a 386 NG. I do have a 386, but its got a lock. As far as I know, they all do. But then I also have a 696 no dash, and a 396 no dash, without the locks. In fact I've got 2 of the latter, but would love to have another 386, particularly if it came "lock free". They're all nice revolvers, I recommend them highly.
