The serial numbers are in the book - Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. You can buy the book or provide the serial number here and someone can look it up for you. The model 686 was introduced in 1980 and is still in production.
Hope this helps.

The AUT series is not specifically listed, but it is most likely 1987. The AV, AW and AY numbers are all 1987. Hope this helps.

scha is correct on the date. If you happen to get the original box with the gun, it should have a label with a number 7xxx under Special Order. This indicates it was made on the xxx day of 1987. Enjoy!

Model 24-3 through 24-5:
Three-letter serial range of ABZ0000 - ABZ9999 with 7,500 made c. 1983-1984.
Not sure about a 24-9.

I have a few guns that the three letter prefix is not specifically listed in the book. I just assume it is the same date as the prefixes before and after. I think it is odd that certain prefixes are not in there.
