Default Model 649

Hey Everyone.
I was wanting some information, I was wondering if anybody owns one of the model 649's? I have been looking at one that is for sell. I don't know any more than what I have read. This gun was built in 1997, and is a 649-3 and it is in 357 mag. The revolver comes with the box and everything that came in it. The price is $550. Is this price about right? From the pictures the gun looks like it is in great condition. Thanks in advance for any help..Ray

Ray, 2 words....BUY IT! I just bought one similar for about the same price, slightly less. They're hard to find, though amazingly been popping up lately.

Ray, I would definitely buy it for that price if it's in decent condition, especially with the box & papers.

Heck, I would buy it even if I wasn't lookin' for one.....

You just don't come across them very often, so when you do, and you like it, jump!!

Ogy, I appreciate the help. I know I am going to buy this gun. All I am waiting on is the seller to return my call. I have seen pictures of the gun, and I know sometime you can't tell alot about a gun with a picture, but the gun looks to be in great condition. I will keep in touch if the deal goes through..Ray

I bought mine off of Guns America about a year ago. It was a first year production (police trade in). I picked it up for $350 which I considered a bargain. It had a few issues, all fixable. Minor issues were some honest carry marks that were easily taken care of with 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grit wet sanding followed by hand polishing with Mothers Mag Polish. I got a nice high gloss finish that rivals any factory nickel.

It also had a little more end shake than I liked and the cylinder would jump over the frame stud frame. On the older J frames, the frame stud is a separate piece from the frame. I sent it to S&W and had the end shake corrected and the frame stud replaced. They brought the gun back to spec with a turn around time of about two weeks ~ all for a whopping $62.

The Model 649 Bodyguard is one of the S&W classics. Great shooter and CCW piece.

Default Just put a 649-1 on lay-a-way...

Went into a LGS during lunch and found a 649-1 for sale. It was the last one as I walked the case. This J frame is tight. Tighter than my 49! Well after checking it out...put a deposit on it. $350. Now this one is a 38 spl. The one you are looking at is a 357 magnum. Still after a 3 inch 649. Let us know how she shoot when you get her!

Default Run, don't walk to buy it.

I found one at the Medina show two weeks ago. No box or papers, but NO LOCK. It is a 649-3 in .357. Guy wanted $625. I offered him $550 and he took it. I hate these little guns, that is why I have 3 of them, and a 2-1/8" 638 for SWMBO.

As soon as I get my XS Big Dot sight, will put new spings in, smooth action, and be ready to rock.

These stainless J frames are a little heavier to carry than their alloy brothers, but are a lot more pleasant to shoot and much quicker on the follow up shot. Like everything else, you have to decide on which compromise you want to make to best meet your particular needs.

If you end up not liking the gun, let me know - there is always room for one more somewhere around here.

S/F,

RAS

I used to think the Bodyguards were ugly, but found that they grew on me over time. Now I really like em' and have a 38-3, 49, and a 649-3. On the lookout for more,I would love to add a nickel 49.

Thumbs up 646-Lew Horton

I have carried snubs a long time now. But bought my first bodyguard style just a few days ago. Its a 2003 Lew Horton special edition, satin stainless, with an engraved coiled rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on me" on enlaid gold. Never saw one like that, so I bought it. Only thing I did with it was put a rosewood comat finger-grip crockback grips on it. Beautiful gun, shoots good, and still fits a pocket. just fine. After shooting it , I decided to keep it as my pocket carry over my 340 scandium.

ladder13, Thank You for posting the pictures for me. I was wanting the members to see this gun. This 649-3 was for sell for $550.00 The guy I bought the gun from is a very nice fellow. While on the phone with him setting up a place to meet, out of the blue he told me he would sell me the gun for $520.00. And this was fine with me. I am still learning about Smith revolvers and I am not sure about the price, but I can live with it. Besides the gun, I also got the original box with all the paper work inside, and of course this was a big plus. Besides ladder13, I wanted to thank Ogy and Fish Fry for all their help. Ray

You did very good Ray , the 649-3's are sleeper Smiths. I wanted one for years now, ever since I saw forum member "N frame" post a pic of his. Other guns took precedent, but this one remained in my memory.
Oglvyspecial helped me get my 649-3 at about the same price as you, and I have the box also.
It's a great gun and I like it better than my 640-1, the Centennial version.

Ray - is this the one in OT? If it is, it caught my eye also. Just wondering.

I bought a 649 no dash in late Jan for $340. It was a LEO BUG and had some wabi on it. It shoots and carries well and my wife pretty much claimed it as her EDC weapon. That said, I dont think I would buy one again and really like my 642 much better.

As a newbie I have a local dealer with 3 of them for sale but I don't understand the difference between 649-1 and 649-2. Aside from my inherited 686 I am new to the wheel gun world. Can someone give me a quick heads up.
