Default what to buy - Governor or M627 Pro 4"

Decided to take a run up to Smith and Wesson Retail and Shooting range late this afternoon, wanted to run some rounds through a couple of new guns I picked up, another M&P9c, 637 ported Pro and our M&P15-22 camo... so on the way up, I'm thinking...... if they have any Governors in the showcase or a 1911 2tone es, I'm putting one on layaway..... Daaaamn, as soon as I walk in.. 3 new Govenors in the showcase, haven't seen any for 2 months!! I walk around to the other side, no 1911E's... ok, I shoot up a few hundred rounds plus, can't wait to go out in the store and poke before they close. I fondle the Governor, not bad, it didn't talk to me.... but if felt ok, I just want one in my vault. I also note a 5", I think, 686 Pro-6 shot, hmmm, naaaa, too big. Slide around the case and check for any 627 or 629PC's, nope just a couple of 657PC's... but wait, what's that Pro series .. 627 Pro with a 4" barrel.... hmmm, let me check that one out...... as soon as I picked it up..... Wow, it talked to me, it just felt right.... now what do I do..... I'm thinking they won't be making that particular model, combo for long, the Governor will be there and can only get better... what to do... I go back up to shoot tomorrow nite after work... what would you guys do...

627 for me. The governor just doesn't hold that much appeal to me. I have to disagree though, as I don't think the governor will be around that long, so maybe it would be the better collector value.

I'm another who finds ZERO appeal for the Governor. I don't care what you stuff in it, as a shotgun round the 410 is only suitable for rabbit sized opponents. IMO it would have been a lot smarter for S&W to have ignored the 410 and packaged the Governor as a 45LC & 45 ACP combination. End result would basically be a more versatile 325 NG in a package much easier to conceal than that current mess.

On the other hand there is the 627, which is a superb revolver in any variation. Personally, I don't like the current slab sided barrel on the PC version but I could learn to live with it. Fact is that from a practical standpoint I expect that the 627 PC is a very well balanced revolver.

hmmm, 2 for the 627.... thanks, that's a start. I have the M60 slab sided Pro, it's a heck of a shooter.... I've been attracted to this style since. As for the Gov... I've read nothing but mostly sparkling reviews and they sure have been tough to find available for any length of time and I live 10 minutes from S&W. keep it coming.

Sparkling reviews... Maybe, but it's still just a gimmick. 410 form a revolver is really not that great. 627 all day for me!

I have both... and they are different animals. I bought the Governor to have as a house gun - for close support with moonclipped .45 ACP's. Why not get a 325NG, you say? Well, they share the same Al/Sc frame construction, black SS barrel and cylinder, and tritium Night Sight on front and a fixed rear sight. They are moonclip-ready, I assume the 325NG, like the 625JM, has a flush rear cylinder and will also load .45 Auto Rims. The Governor has a vestige of the cylinder's OAL left as an outter ring to headspace rimmed cartridges - like .45 Schofield, .45 Colt, and 2.5" .410 Shotshells - it won't close with .45 Auto Rims. The greatest difference often heralded is the size and weight - it is 7/8" longer and 1.5 oz heavier than the 325NG. It is also over $350 cheaper than the 325NG! I bought mine June 12th of last year - S&W had a holster available for it then - and it's a tack driver from 7-12yd with .45 ACP ball ammo or Speer 250gr Gold Dots in .45 Colt. Yeah, it also launches .45 Schofields - and 2.5" .410 shotshells. The Hogue/S&W .500 Magnum monogrips help distribute the recoil - and fit perfectly.

The 627 Pro is a 4" 8-shot .38/.357M with loads of extra goodies. The spring-loaded front sight base allows tool-less sight changes - like my favorite HiViz, the same as the .25" unit that fits my 625JM. It has eased charge hole entries and is moonclip ready. It's a bargain - and I have had mine for four years next month. I cannot imagine being without it. Whether fed singly, with moonclips, or via the 5starfirearms.com speedloaders & baseplate, it is a great plinker - and dependable home protector - even with 'just' .38 Special +P 158gr LHPSWC's. The OP said he had a 60 Pro - here it is with my four year old 627 Pro - which sports the aforementioned HiViz front sight and a JM-style grip (The 625JM convinced me!).

As to which to get... and both isn't a possibility... I'd say get the 627 Pro first. Great utility - fantastic plinker - or SPC competitor. Get some Ranch Products moonclips - they were 50/$50 or 100/$75 delivered. They like Starline and UMC brass best - easiest to handload - even the Remi +P #R38S12's mentioned earlier for home defense. Get the Governor as soon as you can!

I say go for the 627 pro! I have the Performance Center 627, the Pro Series 686 SSR, and the Model 60 Pro. All 3 are worth the money!

Ok, so I made the lunchtime trip to S&W Retail Store and I'm happy to say, I made my decision..... drum roll again.,..... it was a no -brainer.... 627 Pro on layaway... I'm pretty happy, but while there, I had occassion to handle a new J-Frame 351c, now that's a really interesting gun.... As for the Govenator, it'll have to wait, but it won't wait for long...

Thanks, now I have to pay for it.. I checked it out pretty good, everything looked good, barrel was straight, sights were centered, I broke out the feeler gauges, mics and the "timing" light... even the crown looked even. Everything looked so good, I had to double check the stamp on the gun to make sure it was a Smith...
