Default S&W 500 barrel question

Own a S&W 500 with a 6.5 inch long barrel with a "comp" on the end of the barrel. Think this revolver was a special Lew Horton model. The comp looks very similar to the one on the 4 inch model but there does not appear to be a way to remove it.

Curious as to how it would shoot with the comp removed. Looks like it would have to go to a gunsmith to have it cut off and the barrel recrowned.

Has anyone ever removed the comp from a similar model? If you did, were you happy with the results?

If it is a barrel shaped comp that is perforated around its entire circumference it is not removable. That requires a special tool to do correctly and S&W will not sell it to individuals, only gunsmiths. Don

Can't do that. The comp is, if I'm not seriously mistaken, the barrel nut and an essential part of tensioning the shroud/barrel assembly. I think you're stuck with the comp as it is unless you could get a machinist/gunsmith to manufacture a replacement comp w/o perforations for you if that is what is bothering you.

Smith will still need the factory tool to remove and install the comp. Don

Looks like I'll have to live with it. I did order one of those solid comps to replace the one on my 4 inch model. To bad they are not the same as this one.
Thanks for the info.
