Default Best ammo for 625-8 JM?

Newbie here--Just purchased the 625-8 JM firing 45acp. The ammo, well it aint cheap, as you know. Suggestions on ammo? I know just about anything will fire, but would like cleaner, accurate firing ammo. I usually buy from luckygunner. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

WallyWorld, at least here in Alabama, carry 250 round boxes of UMC 230gr FMJ ball ammo - for <$100 inc s/t. Pretty decent & uniform ammo - great plinker rounds. I put lighter springs in my 625JM, forever marrying it to Federal primers in my homebrew ammo. Those UMC ball ammo rounds yield a ftf every couple of moonclips - which goes bang the second time around. With the OEM springs, it'll be 100% reliable. Keep your brass - you may start reloading one day. Welcome to the forum - and the world of big-bore shooting!

Your best bargain will be Walmart. As for the particulars of what ammo, in my area it's either the Federal Champion or the Remington UMC. Both will produce very good accuracy and are quite clean shooting. I'd recomend that you try to avoid the Winchester White Box, my experience with this ammo is that it is extremely dirty shooting and will double the time involved in a good cleaning. I'll shoot the WWB if I can't find anything else but I would prefer not to.

kennyb;
Has the right idea. I have been casting bullets since before 1950 (not a misprint). I learned from Elmer Keith's little blue book, Sixgun Cartridges and Loads. I had a father that encouraged me to cast and load for both of us. He bought the components and I did the work with an occasional "attaboy" (there was method to his madness).

I haven't shot any real amount of factory ammo in years (except for .22 rimfire). During that time I had shot in excess of 200,000 rounds of pistol and revolver ammo. I have always been a person of modest means and that would NEVER have been possible without casting bullets and reloading.

By the way, I have two 625's and they are my most shot revolvers. In fact, today I hit the range with MY 625-8 and my 686 today. It was a GOOD day!

Here's a couple of pictures of specialty ammo for my 625's:

Dale-In the second picture it looks like the cases have a roll crimp on them. I take it you are loading just for the 625 and not a 1911?

Yes, those NOE 250 gr clones of the Lyman 454424 are loaded in Auto Rim cases as are the Mihec 200 gr hollow points. The 250 gr can be safely loaded to 900+fps in the revolver and the Mihec 200 gr bullets can be safely given 1000+ fps in both my 1911's and my two 625's.

I also use the .45 ACP cases with either RIMZ polymer clips (my new standard is the Rimz Model 25 Carbon/polymer stiff clips) or Ranch Products steel clips. Of course, the polymer, and carbon/polymer clips can be loaded and unloaded using your fingers but the steel full moon clips require tools.

If you choose to not reload, .45 Super is a viable option for the more powerful loads. Most of the heavy Auto Rim loads seem to be factory loaded with heavy cast bullets. If you need a hollowpoint of the 230 gr. weight class, the .45 Super should meet the requirement nicely.
