Strange that after so many years of owning and shooting guns, I've never had a Smith and Wesson of any kind. My Pop gave me this last week for my 50th birthday present, the 627 Performance Center 8-shot .357 with 5" barrel. What a piece! I've been shopping around for quite a while to find the "perfect .357", if there is such a thing. I just helped my oldest son find a .357 he could afford, and he got the Ruger GP100, which he has been happy with. I decided that since I can't afford a Colt Python in good shape, I'd go for one of the S&W models. Maybe the 686. But I hadn't found the right one yet. Well, he made the decision for me, so I'll go with that! This looks like a fine pistol.
I still haven't fired it. I'm interested to see how it feels compared to my son's Ruger. But I like the balance. Unloaded it weighs exactly the same as the GP100 with 5" barrel, I believe. So with 8 rounds in it, it doesn't seem like it will be an unmanageable weight. My favorite wheelgun up to now as been my Uberti single action Peacemaker .45 with the long barrel. You really can't compare the two, we're talking about two completely different kinds of gun. I just needed a large frame double-action revolver in my collection, and it seems like from what I've read, this is a Cadillac of pistols. Here are my two babies together.
If anybody has feedback on the 627, I'd love to hear it. I've shot the Ruger GP100, and also the Ruger SP101, but those are the only .357s I've ever fired. I've mostly had automatics.
