Which wood grip for 627 PC?

I recently got the Performance Center 627 with 5" barrel. Although it handles nicely with the stock rubber grip, I wanted to upgrade it to a checkered wood monogrip from Hogue.

I ordered the #29801 checkered cocobolo grip from an eBay site, where it said the grip should fit any of the"N" frame S&W revolvers. The 627 is an "N" frame. But this grip fits horribly. There's a small gap between the trigger guard and grip, but the biggest problem is that the backstrap of the 627's handle curves inward at the bottom, and the grip seems to be made for a gun that has more vertical backstrap, because it leaves a BIG gap open in the lower part of the grip.

Has anyone put a wood grip on their 627 PC, and if so, where did you get it, and what model is it? I'm sending this back to Hogue, because it was misrepresented on fit on all "N" frame revolvers.

Not the same 627 PC as yours, but you get the idea.

I've really enjoyed the boot grips that came on mine, but have swapped them out for these just to see how they did.

6-Pack, can you tell me where you got those? That looks like a good fit.

Sounds to me like you've got a square butt stock on a round butt frame. All my Hogues fit my Smiths like a glove. Some of the older guns, before CNC machining, would require a little bit of fitting because of variances in dimensions, but none of my newer Smiths have required any fitting at all. If you like Hogues get a set for a round butt direct from Hogue and I bet you'll be happy. I don't think there's a better grip out there myself!

The pictures show this pretty clearly, square butt stocks on a round butt frame.

Hogue has pretty good customer service, if you call them they will probably exchange them for the proper grips.

I recently bought wood grips online from grips4guns.com and was very favorably impressed. Good quality, good fit, nice finish, super fast service.

These grips came from Hogue, Goncalo Alves (round butt to sq coverts).
Cost was under $80.

I'm still warming up to the fit, but I like the wood.

Here is how I like my 4" 627 Pro gripped now - Jerry Miculek's grips via Brownell's:

Also shown above, on my 2 5/8" PC627 UDR, are the PC Shop N frame walnut grips, SKU #414170000 ~$50 from S&W Accessories. My PC627s have sported other grips, as has my 627 Pro. Shown below are Kim Ahrends cocobolo non-finger grooved grips: LH = rounded and RH = retro target grips. $60 + s/h from Ahrends or Brownells. Good luck!

Stainz,

Do you have different grips on your 627PC's because one is carried more and the other for primarily range duty?

You always have nice 627's so I appreciate your opinion.

Perhaps he thought he was buying 'square conversion grips', which would fit a round butt gripframe yet have the squared backside of a square butt grip?

627 PC Hunter - I liked the non-fidgety grab my 625JM had with the JM grips, so I tried some on my now gone 5" JM PC627 V-Comp that lost it's original set before I traded for it. It was expectedly front heavy, so they became excess. I eventually tried them on my 4" 627 Pro - and they were better there, balance-wise, than in any other application - including the 625JM. So, I tried the Ahrends retro-targets from that 627 Pro on the first PC627 UDR - great fit/feel - but too big for the implied use - it was a range gun so gripped. I had the rounded Ahrends, a $10 buy at a gunshow, and they were better - until I tried the PC Shop N-frame walnut grips - perfect! I ultimately bought each UDR such a grip - and that's how they are gripped now. That grip makes a decent grab from my holster - and secure enough for most range duties, too.

The retro targets are now on my 4" 629 - perfect there for my wimpy loads!

PS I did get the second UDR as a 'house gun'. Of course, that was the excuse for buying most of my S&W revolvers!

I have been thinking about some custom Jordan Troopers for my 627 Pro.

Stainz, I imagine those PC walnut grips are perfect for all use on the slightly more compact UDR's.
