Default Hammer Block Problem 637

My hammer block doesn't seem to sit right. It never sits up b/t the hammer and frame like it should.

1st pic, this is how it always sits through the trigger pull

2nd pic, this is what I think it should look like at rest.

What's wrong?

Thanks for the help!

It is hard to say from a still picture with the sideplate off, but I do not think anything is wrong. If you look VERY CLOSELY down into the frame as you SLOWLY pull the hammer back, you should notice the hammer block dropping down as it is designed to do. This is MUCH easier to see on a K, L or N frame than on the J, but you can notice it.

It being a safety mechanism, however, do NOT rely on my guess, or the guess of anyone else who cannot see it in person - call S&W. For a safety issue, I would be willing to bet they would send a prepaid shipping label so they could examine it.

Better to be safe than sorry - get S&W to look it over.

Shawn, thanks for the reply, yeah I have tried several times pulling the trigger slowly with no movement in the hammer block. In the full cycle from finger off the trigger through hammer falling (slowly controled) to trigger reset and finger off the trigger the hammer block never moves. It's always in the downward position. I think I might call Smith. Thanks!

soccerguy831,

I don't think you are understanding what shawn mccarver is trying to tell you.

The function of the hammer block is controlled by the pin on the rebound slide, and guided by its' slot in the sideplate. his is such a simple mechanism that it is virtually impossible for it to not work correctly. The way you describe things it sounds like you are expecting it to move up and down properly with the sideplate removed. It isn't going to happen! What shawn was trying to say is you have to be watching carefully between the frame and hammer with the sideplate installed. Your photos are correct, the hammer block is down with the hammer block to the rear (trigger pulled, Pic 1) and up with it forward (Pic 2). The hammer block will not follow the cam if it is free to move forward and back as it will with the sideplate off.

Cock the gun slowly, with the sideplate on, and watch carefully between the hammer and frame as the hammer moves back and you will see the hammer block moving down. It will stay down as long as the trigger is down. Bottom line is don't worry about it! As long as all parts are present and un-damaged it will work properly.

ALK8944,

You are correct that I did not understand what Shawn was trying to tell me, in reading the post again after reading yours; I completely get what the two of you are saying. It also makes sense that without the side plate on the revolver, there would be no way for it to work. I will take a look at it this afternoon.

Thank you both for your help!

Yes, this is what I was trying to say in my post, and I am sorry I did not specify that the observation I suggested should be made with the sideplate on the revolver. Thank you for clarifying this issue.
