Default Model 64-3 manufactur date

I can not find this serial number on any lists..... AJ31xxx.
Anyone know the date of manufacture?
Also, many here shoot +p through their model 64-3.
Is that OK? S&W says no.

AJ31xxx

Welcome! This has 3 letters and 4 numbers in the SN, but one with AJ as the first two letters probably shipped in late 1985.

The factory has stated in the past that any steel K frame revolver with a model number is safe for +P; perhaps they thought you were asking about +P+, which is not standardized at a specific pressure and may be hard on a gun. Hope this is helpful.

Default Just spoke with S&W...

Alan, you were right, S&W said 1985 and the "AJ 3" is likely a badly stamped "B" so AJB10xx is the likely number and this is likely why I couldn't locate it on a list although I couldn't find "AJ" even. He also said it can shoot +P but not a steady diet of them. Thanks so much Alan.

The lists have big gaps in the letter prefixes, so there is a lot of edu-guessing involved. Usually the factory used prefixes in alphabetical order but not always. Enjoy that model 64!

Default A work of art....

I am completely enjoying my revolver. Just purchased and waiting for ammo but I gave it a thorough cleaning and polished a bit. What a sweet piece! Relatively low usage from the condition. The craftsmanship and quality of materials is as good as it gets. I think I'm in love!

Thanks again Alan.
