The current rules of IPSC make a 625 or 25-2 the best revolvers to use. The limitation on firing only 6 shots per cylinder make 7 and 8 shooters superfluous. The 625/25 guns use moonclips which in turn give the fastest reloads. These guns tend to shoot more accurately with hardball ammo.

Good luck in your IPSC endevours!

wow. .45 acp . currently i used it with19

wow .45 acp revolver ! ,currently i used .45 acp 1911 5" in IPSC but now interested in revolver .357 4-6" .do you think 686 can go well?

S&W made the 4" 6 shot .38/.357M 686SSR several years ago - SKU #178012 and in the 2012 catalog. It would be ideal - chamfered charge holes, etc. It's on their site - check to see if it's moonclip-ready (Their site is busy this AM!).

The 686 SSR is a really nice setup. It was created to meet a perceived need for a 4" revolver in .357/38 Special for the Stock Service Revolver class in IDPA. I have one that I use with speedloaders in IDPA matches. You can have TK Custom machine the cylinder to use moonclips for IPSC(you can mail the cylinder only).

Your next decision would be to use major or minor power factor in the revo. I can say that major is certainly possible although the gun is medium weight and intended for minor loads in IDPA.

Good luck!

Another shameless plug for the 625JM here as a better choice for 'major' power factor, if that is your desire. A 230gr FMJ .45 ACP round just has to make 718 fps to exceed 165 pf - that's pretty mild. Nothing loads faster - even in my stumbling mitts - than moonclipped RN .45 ACPs in a 625JM - as if they were magnetically attracted. On the other end of the spectrum - X8 moonclipped .357M's in a 627 - as if they were magnetically repulsed - trying to align the spindly wigglers is fun under 'the clock', too.

Years ago I was plinking away with my 696 and some 240gr LSWC's that barely made 700 fps from some Titegroup in Starline .44 Russian cases (It makes a 'cute' round...). A range friend came out with his 9mm 'race gun' and his latest 127gr +P+ load in an attempt to make major pf. After a couple of jams, he looked at me and said it must be nice to just plink away with 'poof' loads. I let him shoot a few - he commented on it's low recoil, but easy dropping of the steel plates. He was shocked to learn that it made major pf. Sometimes being big, heavy, and slow has it's merits!

Of course, it's overkill if minor pf is all you need.

I don't suggest any speedloader fed gun for serious use in IPSC. It's too slow to reload compared to moonclips.

Very few people in the USA shoot IPSC. What most people call IPSC here is actually USPSA, and the rules are different, especially Division requirements.

IPSC Revolver:
IPSC :: The Handgun Divisions List

Since IPSC revolver only allows 6 shots before reloading, either major or minor power, there is an advantage to shooting major power. 5" and 6" barrels are common in IPSC because of the distance and accuracy requirements.

Suggest you search for the IPSC World Shoot and see if they have a competitor equipment list available. I have seen a S&W L frame shot in .357 Major, but the recoil gets brutal.

I would say that if you are going to go with a .357, go with an eight shot.
I realize that the happy rules of IPSC say six shots before reloading, but if you have a light strike or a short stroke you have two makeups in the same cylinder. .35 sec versus 3 second reload time....just makes sense to me.
