The .45 Colt is a short range round. It is entirely capable of taking deer and much bigger game, but I think you will be better off stalking/standing and keeping ranges under 50 yards.
If the gun is one of the later models, it has extra mounting holes on the top strap that are viewable with the rear sight completely taken off. You can look and see under the top strap with the cylinder open. If there are 2 unoccupied screw holes there is a scope mount available from Brownells that fits the gun with the rear sight completely removed. I believe that is limited to the guns with the shorter rounded off sight strap as opposed to the full length square fronted sight strap.
