LGS has a 3" Model 66-5 for sale. Not a safe queen but clean and not abused. Asking price is $800.00 is that reasonable for a 3"?

Thanks

Some additional info. After a short search it appears that the 66-5 I'm looking at is a limited run with 3.25" barrel and Hi-Viz front sight and a V-Notch rear.

Is it high? Yes, but that is a great carry gun and if you like those limited edition options, then it is worth it.

That one doesn't command the premium that the earlier -2,-3s' seem to. But then you see those going for a grand. Be sure to check the bottom of the forcing cone, it's thin there and can lead to cracking or erosion in that spot.

I would pass on that gun for 800. Why? Because the demand for that 66-5 is very poor and it being not a true 3 inch barrel, 3.25, I would not spend that much on that gun. Take your 800 and add a couple hundred more and buy a super nice 66-2, 66-3 or 66-4 3 inch model and you will never get hurt on your investment.

Not all the 66-5's are the 3.2 inch barrel with hi viz sights. I have a 66-5 that I bought recently ($600) that has a 3 inch barrel with a regular sight. I called S&W and found it was part of a 300 gun shipment to Lew Horton in January of 1999.

I called Lew Horton and learned that the guns had a 3 inch barrel, red ramp front sight and white (faux ivory) grips. The original MSRP was $540.00.

I don't know if $600 was too much, but it is a great gun with incredible balance. I ordered a set of Altamont grips (faux Ivory) to bring it back to original condition, except I added a set of BK grip adapters.

WCCPHD,

You are correct with everything about the gun you pictured. I was talking about the one the original poster had question about, the 66-5 with the 3.25 inch barrel with the front hiviz. Your 3 inch 66-5 is indeed more valuable than the other 66-5 but it still lacks the demand factory due to it being a dash 5 as well as having the mim parts. Either way you still have a nice 66-5 3" that is worth more than you paid for it and has a better following than the 66-5 with the 3.25 barrel.
