I have just bought a M19-3 and now this gem has come along. Being a "-2" I first thought it to be older than the m19 but then I noticed the barrel was not pinned.
So can anyone tell me, What year were the 66-2's introduced with the red-ramp front sight?

66-2 introduced approx 1982, around the same time S&W deleted the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder.

I believe the 66 was offered with the red ramp when it was introduced in 1970.

I have heard of some transitional model 66-2 that have either the pinned barrel or recessed cylinders, but I have not seen one.

That's a nice looking 66. The stocks look dark have they been refinished or oil soaked?

Nice score I love the 66 it's on my bucket list for sure!

Yeah They were painted a dark brown, so I have stripped it off to reveal the wood beneath. They are a bit 'worse-for-wear' but they look better than they did.
Thanks for the information....Serial No is AWU1807

If it's any help my 66-1 which shipped 1981 has the red ramp front sight insert.

The Catalog says it was made in 1987.
My 2 1/2" M66-1 is my favorite K-Frame carry revolver.
They are just about perfect in that respect.

00Bucks2 nailed everything: I have nothing meaningful to contribute.

All I can say is this is making me crazy for a snub 66. Just don't see how I could afford it without sacrificing another member of the flock.

My 3" 66-2 SN AHL08XX was bought new August of 1986. Not Pinned or Recessed. Too sweet to ever sell.

Welcome! This one is listed in the standard S & W reference, but with no details provided. A factory historical letter (or perhaps a call to the organization in KY) may get you more information.

it is the one i really regret getting rid of, 66 no dash. i did however get a 19-2 the other day that put me back in the 2 1/2" .357 club. i think i like it a little better. just saying...

Are those the original grips from the initial photo? If so they cleaned up amazingly well

Good looking 66;)
Nah, they were some spares I had sitting in a drawer. The painted ones it came with are sitting behind the gun, propping it up for the picture.
Some nice 66 snubbies coming out of the woodwork here now. Love the Polished look too.

That's very interesting.
Something I haven't seen before, and It's in great shape too.
Very Nice Pete, Thanks for sharing

Route 66

I've got this old 66, P & R. It is my only K-frame, but it sure is sweet old revolver. S&W really built some beauties way back when...
