Here is a picture of my 627-5 .357 with a 4 inch barrel. I haven't seen any others like it, and I am wondering what you all think about it. It is not cut for moon clips, but is 8 an shot. It has a half lug barrel, not the angle cut barrel they use now.

Is it a limited production run, or just what the 627 used to look like before the current models? How common is it? I am just trying to figure out where it fits into the history of the model 627. Thanks, Ed

Nobody? I am not trolling for compliments or anything like that. I really just wanted to know more about this gun. It is not in the current line up.

Does anybody know how long S&W made this configuration?

I'm thinking is it is just a run of the mill no frills 627. Obviously not a PC gun or anything like that.

Thanks in advance for any comments or info. Ed

Do you have the box or know the SKU #? The only 4" the SCSW shows is with a compensator. Possibly a re-barrel?

I have the box. It says;

model 627, caliber .357, type REVLR, Barrel 4, SKU 163357.

Serial number CNJ24xx.

Nothing about a compensator. Thanks, Ed.

So I learned my lesson today, I googled the sku number and came up with more info than I found doing my other searches. I found this PDF from S&W that says it came out in 2008,

http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore/SmWesson2/upload/other/PS/163357.pdf

by 2011 I found posts asking were this model went, so I am assuming it was discontinued by then? Only made for 2 or 3 years.

Apparently it's downfall was the PC gun was only $50 more and came already cut for moon clips and other improvements.

I would love to know the production numbers for this sku if anybody has them.

If anybody has anything to add please do, thanks Ed.

There is one on Gunbroker.

Hi,

Can't help with any info on this 627-5, but I just saw one on Gunbroker. They started the bidding at $950.00.

I don't want to get into trouble by posting a link so just do a search under 627.

Thanks OldGrump. Good idea to keep an eye on Gunbroker to see what turns up!

That listing is for the slab side barrel with the angle cut on the bottom of the barrel. Mine is a half lug round barrel.

That is a nicer gun than mine, and apparently much more common. It is cut for moon clips and some other upgrades and was only $50 more than mine was.

You are correct that SKU 163357 was introduced at the 2008 SHOT show. It was the first 8 shot 357 magnum revolver produced on the S&W production floor.

You are wrong about the pricing. The 5" Performance Center offering (not available in 4") had an MSRP of $1,272 vs $916 for your revovler. Street prices were also several hundred dollars apart.

What was introduced alongside your revolver was the 4" 627 Pro SKU 178014. The "PRO" firearms are collaborations between Production and Performance Center.

The price difference between the Production 627 at an MSRP of $916 and the Pro with an MSRP of $964 made the Pro a VERY good value. As you mentioned it was already cut for moon clips and it had the PC barrel as well.

Additionally, the heavy profile barrel on the standard 627 in place of a traditional tapered barrel did not sit well with the old S&W die hards

Ok, I was confusing the 4"pro with the 5"PC gun. Thanks very much for the great info in your post. It is the info I was looking for.

I guess the bottom line is mine is fairly scarce, because they didn't make them long because of the more desirable 4"pro being such a strong value.

I really like the old school barrel profile of mine, and have the 5star speed loader so I don't really miss the moon clips. It goes so well with my 617. They are both great guns.

Is there anyway to find out how many were made of this sku?

Thanks again for all of the replies, if anybody has anything to add please do, Ed

I also have a 627-5 just like yours. I bought mine used a few years ago at a local shop. I had recently sold my 8 shot .38 Super revolver (the Super was a huge disappointment and an embarrassment for a Performance Center revolver) and I wanted an 8 shot .357 Magnum that would conquer all the shortcomings of the .38 Super. I blundered into the 627-5 not even aware they made such a thing. I wanted stainless steel, a round 4" barrel and a fluted cylinder and that's exactly what I got. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I eventually did have mine moonclipped and it's perfect for everything from ICORE Limited competition to Steel Challenge type events to concealed carry. Sometimes I even think I like it more than the various 625s I own. I think it's the perfect .357 Magnum revolver.

These statements pretty much sum up my 627 story too. I did not know it existed, found it used, and fell in love. :) The 8 shot cylinder makes for a quicker double action trigger pull. Up to this gun, my .357's were all Rugers. Ed
