Greeting from Detroit!
I am a brand new member to the site and hope i am in the right place to have my question answered. (and I already made a donation lol)
I have a 1985 model 25-5 .45LC in nickel finish. I was told by a local gun dealer that he doesnt believe that my gun was factory nickel. I have the blue S&W "revolver" box it came in and the serial number on the sticker matches the number on the gun...However, under the Fn (finish) section of the label it says "B" for blue. Another local dealer told me that if it is after market nickel whomever did it did an exceptional job as it looks factory to him. Is it possible that in 1985 S&W may have made an error on the label?

Welcome to the Forum!!

Remove the grips and look for the letter "N" underneath the grip area. There should also be a letter "N" on the face of the cylinder after it is rotated out in the yoke.

I hope this helps.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
There are lot's of very knowledgeable members here. Although revolvers are not my forte', I believe if you remove the stocks and on the left side of the grip frame at the bottom you will see a "N" stamped if it's originally nickel plated. If the hammer and trigger are nickel plated, thats a sure sign that it was done outside of the factory. As far as your box is concerned, never say never with anything S&W, thats what makes this maker so interesting. Please post some pic's and I'm sure more knowledgeable members will be along shortly to advise further. Good luck with your Model 25-5.

Thank you all for the responses. I will remove the grip and check for the N. I kinda hope I don't find one so I can shoot the damn thing without worrying about the value of a true nickel 25-5. If it is true nickel I am going to sell it immediately.
