Default Model 19-7 sanity check

I do my FFL transfers at a local pawn shop. When I was there
I noticed a Model 19-7 6" barrel that is in very good to
excellent condition. Typical wear to the bluing around the
muzzle, a small wear spot on the side of the barrel but overall
very nice.

While checking it out, the only thing I noticed was that the
cylinder gap is .005" but I think that would still be within spec.

It only has some Pachmayr grips, not the originals. I didn't get
the serial number, but (what I think is) the lot number is BSB8784.

The price we're talking about is $500. Does that seem
reasonable? Is there anything else I need to check on this
model?

Thanks in advance for any help. I've learned much from
reading this group. I bought my first S&W (a K-22) as a result
of reading posts here.

Jay

As long as lock up & timing is good, price sounds about right.

If properly checked, a cylinder gap of .005" is well within spec and near ideal; also a good sign that the revolver's fairly fresh and/or well maintained.

It's also possible that on the -7s Pachmayr grips are original -- many Smithies shipped with the rubber grips in the '90s -- hopefully someone can say definitively.

If all else checks out, is in good condition and within spec, $500 is a perfectly good price, though you should always haggle at least a little.

Here's a couple great links on assessing revolvers for purchae:

6-inch 19s are pretty versatile guns. It's a nice S&W to have around. The barrel-cylinder gap is acceptable and nothing to worry about. If you checked the gun for timing (hard to do in most gun shops I have been in) and it doesn't push off or have excessive endshake, it should be ready to go. The price sounds good. Prices on the 19s have been climbing lately.

Default Thanks all!

You've been very helpful, I'm going to go for it.

I had been very tempted to go with a new 586 until I saw
the model 19. I like the model 19 over the 586 in the same
way I like the K-22 over the 617, a little lighter, more lithe
feels nicer in my hand.

I'm new to S&W but quickly becoming a fan.

Thanks for your help,

Jay

Just in case it isn't in those links provided, about evaluating used revolvers, check for flame cutting of the top strap near the forcing cone. A quick google search will explain flame cutting and show photos, with these K frame 19's this is a potential issue, from what I've read. Good luck on your purchase!
