Default Can you pocket carry a 2" model 64?

Going to look at a local dealer that has a 2" model 64 in 95% condition for $450.

Anyone have this gun? Can you pocket carry it? I have large hands and wanted to look at this as pocket gun.

Any info or pics would be appreciated.

Thank you

J frame lightweight makes a whole lot more sense for pocket carry.
Get the 64 anyway, Great little revolver!

I just picked one up a couple weeks ago after looking for one for the last year. It's a little too big for me to pocket carry. I carry it in an OWB holster.

I had one for years. It was a great shooting snubbie, but you would have to have very large pockets and a good belt to hold your pants up if you were going to pocket carry it. It's quite a bit larger than a J frame and heavier as well. If you have any use for a K frame snubbie, though, the 64 is a fantastic gun.

Not only the pocket size, but the opening (so you can draw it) and how well supported it is with a belt and the pant material. It will sag in anything short of a pretty heavyweight pair.

Well you could probably ankle carry a model 29 4'' BUT WHY?

The 64 a very nice gun but much bigger than a J frame or small pocket auto like the bodyguard and also would be on the heavy side. I just put my model 15 2'' in my pocket and I have the distinct impression that even with a good pocket holster it will print.

Heavy and big, not to be carried in my pocket with so many other good choices out there.

Don't let anyone tell you that there is anything wrong with a Model 64 for pocket carry! No doubt there are better options when specific factors are considered, such as weight and size, these are your decisions to make.

I have been carrying a Model 10 and Model 12 2" RB in my pocket, in a holster sized for it, for several years. I do this at work, which has no stated restrictions, but is definitely not friendly to the situation, and have never been asked about it. I can guarantee that if anyone had noticed something would have been said! Dress is "business casual", and jeans on Friday.

I admit I prefer the Model 12 to the Model 10 because of the weight difference. I do have J-Frame guns, but far prefer the K-frame.

The biggest consideration for pocket carry is pocket depth, although some pants do have pockets that are too narrow to work well.

For heaven's sake, buy the 2" 64! Bought mine in 1977, cannot visualize trading or selling it. Would buy another, but 'them as has 'em, keeps 'em.' To pocket carry, it might be wise to obtain a 2nd hammer to be 'dehorned' so it would draw from the pocket w/o snagging. Poster Alk89444 made some suggestions about how to facilitate pocket carry with this gun. Follow them.

I only ask because a jframe just seems too small for me to shoot well. I have pocket carried a Ruger SP101 in the small insert pocket on most jeans, but it can get real heavy.

Anyone have a good pick of a 2" model 64 compared to a jframe for comparison?

Thanks for your help.

Not to be a wise guy because this is the S&W forum but have you considered a Colt for pocket carry? Their Dick special and some other models are bigger than a J but a bit smaller than a K and they are 6 shots.

I have been using 5.11 Tactical Pants for about a year now.
I just dropped my 4 inch M67-1 in the pocket and it disappeared.
Heavy and I don't have a pocket holster for this gun, but I think it could be done. A 3 inch M64 would be a cinch.
But, I have a M442 for pocket carry in the summer. The rest of the time, I use steel J frames and the M67 in Lobo pancake holsters. Whether the gun is in a belt holster or in a pocket holster, it is held up by the belt and or suspenders. The pocket carry option may feel less secure if the holster is not a good fit in the pocket. One company will make them to a tracing of the pocket. This seems ideal. I have noticed that the hammer on M60's does snag freely with pocket carry. I guess that is not news. I am in the process of switching from my M60 to a M640 Mag. I am sold on the Centennial models.

Best,
Rick

My 2" Model 64 does coat pocket duty in cooler weather.
It gets switched with the Model 12.

Depends on the pants, and, of course, the belt. The C***s are slightly better, but I can tell you for a fact that the S&W will work, at least with a bobbed hammer, because I have done it with an improved Model 56, AKA Model 15 2". The sight is a problem with some pants. Since your gun won't have that problem, it's a winner.

I recommend a Don Hume JIT slide as a pocket holster. It ia good belt holster, too, at least for a 2" barrel.

Of course you can!

If it fits you and your clothing.

Can't change you, but you can dress around your handgun. That's what tailors are for! Anything you have can be altered.

When you buy clothing, do so with function as well as style in mind.

I bought this -2 in the classifieds last year @325, with Goodyears. Put some Grashorns on it. BUT, that was last year, and how often do you see snubbie 64's for sale?

I have not seen a 2 inch 64 in twenty years locally. I wish I had kept mine. Another regret.
Placing the thumb on the hammer when drawing keeps it snag free. in pocket carry.
Also a pair of bib overalls is great for packing in the pockets.

I have a 2" 64 with a bobbed hammer and I have pocket carried it some but only at the range. Seemed to heavy. I'll stick to my 642 for pocket carry.

It could be done but the 64 is pretty heavy for a pocket gun. If you had a pocket holster and the gun was despurred you might get away with it. A despurred Model 12 would be better.

That said get the 64 and try it. They don't pop up that much.
