Model 60 Three Inch 357 -Mfg for 5 years?
I just recently ran across a very nice one (no lock) the other day with the serial number starting at CBHxxxx; so it puts it around 1996.. I'm not familiar with these; what is the going price for one in 95% with box and papers?
Anyone have one in that vintage that cares to post a picture

By your description, this is probably a model 60-10. These are popular at present and prices have gone up quite a bit; $600-750 is average, and I recently saw one sell for nearly $1K.

I like mine. They are not cheap. Anything close to $600 would be a deal.

Do not. Would like to have open top outside waistband leather holster. Also have 642 and 649 which I carry in pocket holsters. Would be nice if a holster would fit all three? And I am left handed.

Just sold mine last Sat at the Berea gun show. Never fired it, liked the feel of it. It was a lot harder to hide then my 642. Always seemed to "stick out" when I carried it. I'll go back to the 386 in the winter and the 642 in the summer. Larry

It appears these 60-10 guns were only produced from 1996 to 2001 before the locks were introduced. Does this make them harder to find? Reason I'm asking I see very little mention of them on the forum. Seems like this would be a better choice than the Model 13-3 three inch.

Anything pre-lock is a little harder to find these days, but this particular J-frame has piqued the interest of shooters and collectors alike due in part to its compact size yet robustness: all steel, full lug, .357 capable, target sights.
Seems to be favored by those who want a woods/hiking gun that'll carry especially easy.
If you're anti-MIM, you might to check as most S&W revolvers were switched to MIM parts around '97; many incorrectly assume that MIM and lock arrived together.
"Better choice" has a lot of variables -- what's your intended use?

Good question. The perspective of the question was from two standpoints (1) comparing the model 13 three inch as a CCW and (2) potential resale value of the two.

I looked for a 60-10 for about a year and finally gave up and started looking for a 60-15 (lock version) while still keeping an eye out for a -10. Took another 6 months to find a new 60-15 and I bought it. It is a very nice shooter with .38 +P and a horror (to me at least) with anything that says .357.

Good point, I don't think I would be shooting much .357 on a regular basis, but loaded with .357 when carrying.

I found the same thing with full power Magnum ammo, like the Federal 125 gr JHP.
On the other hand, the excellent Speer 135 gr Gold Dot SB ammo in Magnum is about 100 FPS faster than the plus P version. I have found it useable in the J frame Magnum revolvers. If not, I would recommend the plus P version. Both are good ammo for SD, according to reports from PD's that use them in short barrel guns.
Best,
Rick

Well, the 60-10 has target sights that will be a lot easier to bring to zero and probably to see, too. The Model 60 will carry like it's not even there on any decent gun belt. The 13 will feel like you're wearing a gun. You'll probably shoot smaller groups with the 13, but the 60 will hide better than the 13 if you don't put big stocks on it.
As said, probably most of us think of the 60-10 as a woodsloafer's trail gun, though it might be better with a 4-inch standard profile barrel. Deviating from the usual Kit Gun pattern was not a great thing, in my opinion, but I suppose S&W wanted to make it appeal to both the CC and sportsman markets, and they came up with a decent compromise. It is really a pretty nifty little revolver, but not any huge improvement over the original 60-4 design. It certainly is not a prettier gun than the 60-4.

Had one for a while. Nice little gun, and I got about 1350 fps out of it over the chronograph with the 125 gr. .357 load. Impressive and the recoil was pretty noticeable, too. However the DA was poor and in two trips back the factory didn't improve it much. I probably should have done my own work on it, but traded it off and went back to my 60-4 which had a very nice DA and all the power I needed.
That 60-4 is a keeper.

I was fortunate to pick up a 60-4 a few years ago and it is a dynamic 38. Superbly accurate and +P rated. I'm a LEFTY also and I carry it in a Lobo Leather Pancake rig. I own ten Lobo rigs and recommend them very highly. Check out his website, or do a search on this forum for Lobo holsters.

Condition and accoutrement being equal, resale I think would be comparable, with a slight edge to the Model 13 because of the pixie dust of a round butt, three inch, .357 K frame and the last revolver the FBI carried before going semi-auto.
For carry, the 60 has a small dimensional and weight advantage, though I'm guessing on the belt it won't translate to an overwhelming felt difference. I'm of the mind that the 60's target sights won't come into play versus the 13's fixed sights in an actual self defense scenario. I also find that unless target sights have a red ramp front (and ideally a white outline rear), I don't pick them up any better or worse than standard fixed sights.
If you're going to be shooting .357, the beefier 13 will handle it better.
Neither is a bad choice for concealed carry, but the 13 feels more like a purposeful fighting gun.

Strongly suggest keeping to .38 +P for defense rounds; if no alternative, opt for a powered down .357 defense round like Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 gr. or Remington Golden Sabres.

I really really like my 60-10. Fell into my lap when an old aunt was moving to another state and found it all alone in bottom of her unmentionables drawer. Happy Birthday! Ser#CBCxxxx from 1998, was never shot.
With the larger '3-finger' S&W grip it is easy to shoot even with my big hands. 38 and +P is of course mild but I have several boxes of 357 through it over the years. Shoots nice, it is my EDC with 110gr JHP in the summer. The target sights are not an issue.
