Help tell me what I've got and what it's worth
I have just acquired an S&W model 686 that has a high polish frame, its stainless steel, not nickel. The gentleman that I bought it from states that he bought it from a retired detective from Detroit PD whom was given it as a reward for 30 years of service. He states he purchased it with the Pachmayr grips that are currently on it. It has a six inch barrel, and is in immaculate condition. If you remove the grip you can see what appears to be an almost printed on, set of characters: DP111, that is to denote it as being number 111 out of 200 made for the department. I was wondering if any of you gentlemen might have one of these, and could tell me its value. I assure you, that I did not get taken for a ride either way, just was wondering if anyone knew about them, thank you for your time.

I have a 686 2.5. I'm pretty sure that number he gave is not the serial number. Serial should start with 3 letters and then some numbers. You would probably do better if this was moved to the next section down, 1980- Present.

The DP111 is under the grips on the left inside of the backstrap.

Yes, that's who i bought it from, I just wondered if someone on this forum might also own one. Either it is rare, 1 of only 200, or its just polished, but I believe the guy is telling the truth, and that marking on the grip, there's got to be something to it.
