Default 642 wear - normal or not

I have had this gun approximately 3 yrs, bought it new, fired somewhere between 1500 and 2000 rounds thru it. The flat part of the recoil shield is just shiny. The angled part is between 0.005 and 0.010 inch deep (as measured by my thumbnail ). Is this normal? Should I be lubricating the contact areas with gun grease?

If you are talking about the curved mark ending at the center pin hole:

Yes, that is normal.

It is extremely unlikely it is .010" deep, maybe .002-.003".

Of course you should lubricate that area, just like the rest of the gun!

This has nothing to do with rounds fired, and everything to do with how many times you have opened and closed the cylinder, whether loading & un-loading or just playing with it.

Yes, I know, I quoted rounds fired just to give a relative number of times of how many times the cylinder has been opened and closed.

However, I have never lubricated that area. Will do so from now on and just watch the wear pattern. Thanks for the reply.

Just don't slop too much oil in there, it can attract dust and grit, or even kill the primers on ammunition in the cylinder.

A little oil is good, a lot is not so good. I just wipe that area (and most others) with a slightly oily rag after cleaning.

Cheers!
