460XVR
About a month ago a friend let me fire his .460 (Leupold scope on top of the 8.xx" barrel). Very impressive. Unbelievable power and extremely accurate! I told him if he ever wants to sell... Well, as of today the gun is mine, along with 1,200 rounds of .454 brass, 80 rounds .460 brass, 2 boxes factory .454, 5 boxes factory .460, and Hornady dies.
However, he told me a separate muzzle brake is needed for firing lead bullets. Also, this gun has interchangeable front sights and only has the one included.
I'm hoping the kind folks here can help me figure out what I need to buy to complete this gun "as delivered" from S&W. I also need to find a rear sight and an owner's manual. Might be a good idea to read it since I didn't even know a separate brake was required for lead bullets. What else don't I know?
My friend bought the gun second-hand and doesn't have any of these things.
I work in a gun store but we haven't had a 460 in stock for over a year so I can't just open up a new box to see what I need.
Many thanks - m

Yes , the 8.375" gun does come with two compensators. Would need a picture to see which one you have installed. They can be ordered from Smith and Wesson. The gun would of also came with a fired cartridge and a pair of IL keys. The front sight is interchangeable but different sights are not provided with the gun (at least the 2 of this length I have).

If you've got the 460XVR that came with the Hiviz front sight then yes it should have a 2nd solid black blade replacement as well. If it came with the black blade installed then I don't believe it comes with a 2nd front sight.

Thanks, guys. I am attaching a photo. I believe this is the copper jacketed brake because that is what we were shooting a month ago. I'd appreciate it if you would confirm so I can go search for the one I need.
This is the hi-viz sight. Never really cared for them. I'll have to check into the solid black and the brass bead. I have to ask, though, since I don't have an owner's manual, I don't know if I need to pounch out the drift pin on the front sight to change it. On my other S&Ws I merely push the sight to the rear, lift out the front, and do the reverse to install. But this one is not coming out. Maybe I just need to try again?
How do you like your 460?
Thanks, again!
Well, I just tried to post a photo but for the life of me cannot see where or how to do it. OK. Broke the code. Had to edit my original post (see above).

If your compensator has ports on the top, it is for jacketed bullets...if it only has ports on the side it is for lead bullets. You can shoot jacketed bullets with the lead compensator, but not the other way around. The jacketed compensator does a better job controlling the muzzle rise, but with the vertical ports it can become stuck in place due to lead residue buildup. If you shoot the shorter rounds, .45 Casull or 45 Colt, you should thoroughly clean the cylinder prior to firing .460 S&W - the powder "rings" left by the shorter rounds could cause pressure issues with the hot loads. I got tired of the scope set up and went back to open sights, and I think the gold bead front is vastly superior to the Hi Vis fiber optic. Visit the S&W website to obtain a manual - or browse a PDF version. I assume you are familiar with revolvers in general, but I'll say it anyway - make sure your grip (and anyone you let shoot it) does not expose your fingers to the gases jetting out from the barrel-cylinder gap!!! And, oh yeah, double up on the hearing protection and never ever fire a single shot without it! And, if are using jacketed bullets, invest in a good copper dissolving cleaning fluid, because at these velocities it sure does lay down the copper in the barrel.

The compensator for lead bullets extends beyond the barrel shroud with a small hole in the top.
"As delivered" the XVR came with TWO compensators, however I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over the situation. The "lead" comp lacks the small holes in the top since these could become filled with lead debris and make removal of the comp difficult...as I said, difficult, not impossible.
Years ago I shot hard cast lead through my Dan Wesson exclusively and after each session I pulled the barrel and cleaned it...never had a problem.
The point is, if you only have the one compensator made for jacketed loads and you feel an overwhelming urge to shoot some cast bullets...it won't hurt the gun.

Thanks a lot to everyone. The store where I work finally got a new one in and I checked the box to see what comes with the gun. Gold bead and HiViz. There was also some sort of L shaped rod, about 6" long and 1/4" thick. Dunno what it is for.
Great advice for keeping the fingers out of the cylinder gap area - I was already aware but I appreciate your concern. Thanks again, m.

The rod is for removing the comp.
Have had several new 8.375 and some came with it some did not.

The supplied Allen wrench can also be used as a lever to rotate the compensator for removal.
