Default 64-3 year of manufacture

Hello to all. I've been coming here for a bit and thought it time to join since I've seen some pretty good information and very friendly and helpful people on the site. I've ordered a copy of the Smith book, but alas, patience is not one of my strongest points. Having said that I just picked up a model 64-3 stainless with a 4" barrel in 38 special and am looking for it's birth year. The serial # is 1D870XX. I was looking for a manufacture year on a 686 and found a code for manufacture year I thought on this site. I may be incorrect since starting about 4 years ago hearing, sight, mind started losing their edge. Lol.

Welcome to this fun place! Your 64-3 looks like it shipped around 1979-80. You are going to enjoy that and your SCSW.

Default 64-3

Thanks for the info. I already am enjoying it. When I got it it was in pretty rough shape. Looked like it was left in a tackle box in the boat on the water for a couple years. Bore was still good with nice rifling, all the important stuff was ok. It even had cobwebs in the cylinder. It's taken me 2 days of work but she looks like new money. I couldn't pass up the price, got it for less than 250.00 and that was at GM. Now if only I could hit the lottery I could afford all those other beautiful guns that keep catching my eye. Lol

You will enjoy your 64! I have a 64-3, that is from 1981. Got mine on a trade for a Ruger P89. Got it with magna grips, but as usual changed to targets. I shoot mine well. It just has a natural feel. Bob
