Hogue grip screw

Hi all

I have just fitted the Hogue monogrip to my 629 44 magnum and I have noticed today that the grip screw at the bottom of the grip is slowly unwinding itself. Now I have to admit I did not do it up too tight as per the instructions for installation, but perhaps I did not do it up "snug" enough!

Can someone advise if their hogue grip screw comes loose with after firing for a while or maybe mine just needs tightening properly. I wish I new what "snug" means when doing up a screw? Obviously it does not mean "really tight" , but its not finger tight.

I guess I could use some loctite, but it does not say anything about it in the hogue manual.

Any help appreciated

cheers

I've had the Hogue monogrips installed on my model 29 for decades now and shot 1000s upon 1000s of rounds without any loosening whatsoever.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you didn't tighten sufficiently?

Tighten securely, but don't over-tighten and I would think it shouldn't be a problem.

Loctite shouldn't be necessary, and I don't use it for this screw, but I guess it couldn't hurt given that you've experienced this issue.

+1 on what blkbearpatrol said, a little more torque on the driver handle should do it, they're a pretty stout setup, but I can understand their warning, some folks think snug means tight and and few more turns for good measure! If a little tighter doesn't do the trick, it wouldn't hurt to put a drop of fingernail polish on the screw, easily removed and cleaned up if you want to remove it, but don't think you'll need it. My brother bought a new Sig 229 Elite in 40 cal., screws kept working loose and falling out. Tried both blue and RED Loctite, still worked out. Super Glued em! These things have barely a few threads and are darned hard to find on the ground outside. Great looking grips, but you'd expect something better to hold them on a $900 pistol.

I have three N frame revolvers with Hogue/JM grips. One of the three is doing the same thing; screw backing out occasionally.

So far, I've simply tightened it occasionally. I'll probably use some mild locktite or nail polish one day.

Do not use loctite for this application. Completely unnecessary. I have never had a Hogue screw work loose. Ever.

Glad to hear you've never had a problem.

But why would you tell folks to NEVER use Loctite for this application?

Obviously, some folks have had the screw loosen. I have one (of three) that does it.

I haven't yet tried it, but I don't think a dab of mild Loctite or nail polish will hurt a thing.

Call Hogue they'll send you a new stirrup and screw for free. Maybe the ones you have are just a loose fit, and a new parts would cure the problem. One thing for sure -- it's not a common problem.

Thanks for the feedback

I have done it up a little tighter and will monitor. It was not done up very tight though. snug to me is perhaps different to someone else.

We need another definition of "snug" other than comfortable, warm, and cozy; well protected from the weather or cold lol

I would prefer not to use loctite if possible, but understand why it may be required in some applications. cheers

Snug may just mean to bring it down to some resistance and then 1/2 a turn.

If that doesn't work make it a full turn, etc, etc.

I would never use LocTite on this screw for fear of what may happen when it's time to clean the gun. You do remove the grips when cleaning?

Bob
