Odd and Rare Hogue Monogrips

Here is another rare monogrip. Since finding out several years ago that the monogrip was made for cut-frame guns, I have been hoping to find one. I was told this was for a K frame square butt frame but it looked more like a round butt K frame to me. The small bottom portion is a give away that it is not a full square butt. I was pleasantly surprised when I got it that it was in fact made for an N frame cut-frame with holes for strain screw adjustment and strain screw set screw. These holes were relatively common on Guy Hogue two piece grips but I had not seen many in a monogrip. This is an early set and the rosewood is very highly figured. Only problem is I don't have a cut-frame N.

Also included is a K frame cut-frame set made by Patrick Hogue a few years ago, being made from an early set of blanks that he had kept.I hope CH4 is as happy with his Patrick Hogue grips as I am.

Keep your eyes peeled for monogrips that look to small on the bottom.View attachment 758680View attachment 758681View attachment 758682View attachment 758683View attachment 758684

The N cut-frame monogrip has gotten even more odd. I found the right 28-2 to chop and did so, fitting it first to a set of Cut-frame Farrants and a set of Blackfords. I knew the monogrip looked to rounded and sure enough when I tried to put the monogrip on th 28-2 the backstrap stuck out. Come to find out the cut to the front toe is plenty and the front strap is tight against the inletting, however the backstrap apparently requires modification as well. I did shoot the gun with the monogrips and despite the frame sticking out the grips were extremely comfortable.

The 28-2 looks right with the Blackfords so that is how it will stay for now.

Added 6/17/25: I've taken a little off the front strap above the screw and off the inletting on the grips themselves. I'm at the point that any further wood removal will leave the wood more proud above the little flare of the frame and if I remove the flare from the frame, the Farrants and Blackfords will not fit properly. Not bad for now.

This pair was put on my 686, and then custom fit to the gun by the "old man" himself, working from his traveling trailer/workshop in 1987 at the Masters International Shooting Championship in Barry, IL. They use the older attachment saddle that required the removal of the grip orientation pin. He did tell me there is no finish on the grip, just natural smooth Pau Ferro wood. Put a good carnuba wax on it every couple years.
I think SG-688 has seen these.

Yes, they "burnished" them and buffed them with Carnuba wax. I burnish them with scotch-brite pads and buff on a wheel with MinWax Finishing Wax, since I already have it.

Here is another set of very early J frames with a brass "peg" instead of wood. They were playing with the finger grooves. Appears to be Cocobolo wood with a Micarta end cap. Gun & grip take a full length stirrup verses a shorter one of later years.
