I looking at this model 686 Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum 8&3/8" Barrel. The guy wants $1250 for it, but he will trade. I have a trade that is worth $1100 real money that I may be able to do an even swap. I have looked at it in person and it looks a little better than the pictures. No box or paperwork. These are kind of hard to come by with this barrel and it is a 686 (no-dash) Not sure it's worth that kind of money but would like more opinions. Thanks to all for your help.

$600 to $800 tops for me.

Not impressed with the long barrel.

Just my honest opinion.

I agree with gunnails on price range. The 8 3/8-inch barrels usually sell for LESS. A 3-inch M686 will sell at a substantial premium, the 2 1/2-inch after that. The Hogue grip and holster adds, maybe, $15 to the deal, if you even want them.

These have bucked the "shorter is more expensive tread" - but $750-800 is average in the current market.

No, but what I have noticed is 8 3/8" model 14s, 17s, 586s and 686s seem to sell at prices close to the 4 and 6" versions, and sometimes a little higher. Compare these to 8 3/8 vs. a 3.5-4" model 27...

I've only noticed that M617's with the long barrel sell higher, but if you've seen these others go higher too, I can't disagree.

That price sounds like something that would be on a gun here in a California.... no box or papers, I think it's on the high side.

I guess it also depends on the model and local interests, for me my 8-3/8" M29-2 and M57 no-dash have been an albatross for selling, but yet when I'm at the range with my 8-3/8" M48-4 .22 Mag, I get inquire/offers to buy it.

Could be that it's just the heavy N-Frames that carry a stigma, and the lighter K & L frame in the 8-3/8" versions are more desirable.

I PAID $1100.+ ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO FOR MY 8 3/8" NO-DASH 686. ITS A FANTASTIC REVOLVER, THAT DOES NOT COME UP FOR SALE OFTEN. IT PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE, EVERY TIME I SHOOT IT, AND I DON'T REGRET PAYING THAT KIND OF MONEY FOR IT AT ALL. I WOULD BUY THIS ONE, OR TRY TO MAKE A TRADE. YOU WON'T REGRET IT…..

AN 8 3/8" S&W, WITH A RED DOT SHOOTS LIKE A RIFLE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ENAMORED OF LONG BARRELLED REVOLVERS. MY FIRST WAS AN 8" PYTHON, AS SOON AS THEY BECAME AVAILABLE. THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY AN 8 3/8" 629, THE NO-DASH 686, AND A NO-DASH 617. THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC SHOOTERS………

I ended up buying this pair of Smiths for $1700... I kept my trade and came home with these two revolvers, a 648 (no dash) .22 magnum with a 6" barrel and this 686 (no dash) .357 magnum with an 8 3/8" barrel. I think I did OK over all since the 648 is a very rare revolver... Thanks for all the input you guys! Best regards to all!!!

I LOVE THE 686 NO-DASH MODELS ! ! ! I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A COMPLETE SET OF NO-DASH 686s, MYSELF. BEST WISHES AND GOOD HUNTING, Cadiman 1949………...

A 686-3 with 8 3/8" barrel was listed at $900 at a local shop and it did not last long, so I think you did well!

For the pair you did good. The 648 usually goes for 1k or more now and the 686 around $700-$800 no a days. It's still a lot of money but you have two awesome guns and the K combats on your 648 get $150-$200 alone sometimes. Have fun.
