Corrosion on a silver Governor
Just bought a new silver Governor about a month ago, my first S&W. I have put perhaps 60 rounds through it, mostly Winchester 230 grain fmj ACP. This constitutes four different sessions and I have cleaned the gun after every session.
Today I notice some crazing like appearance on the frame, inside above the serial number, on the top of the frame, and where the barrel exits the frame. There is also a motteling visible on the top of the frame that looks like overspray. These issues are on the alloy only, not on the steel.
I have used Hoppes and CLP products. The gun has not seen rain, dirt etc. It has not been out of my control since I brought it home. Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.
PS just bought a 380 Bodyguard and ordered a 500 Mag 4".

It is not a silver gun its "stainless steel. But, actually there is no such thing as stainless steel. Stain resistant is more accurate. Anyway what you describe in the area where the barrel and cylinder come together inside the frame is from the blast of hot gasses escaping in the gap. Some 'flame cutting" in the top strap above the gap is normal. But, some loadings are worse than others

Hmmm, haven't seen such shenanigans on any other gun I've had. I used the term "silver" to refer to its color vs the black model. The barrel, cylinder and trigger/hammer etc. are steel and the frame is the scandium alloy. That is the portion of the gun that has suffered.

Sounds as if you have a carbon and general crud build up, which is normal. Try wiping this off with a Lead-Away cloth, or some Feltz polish. Remember less is more, so start with a gentle touch.
Oh, welcome to the forum.

Don't use Hoppes #9 on the frame. In some cases it will screw up the finish.

Thanks all, it's good to be here. I will try those suggestions. For me, jury is still out on the Scandium alloy. I like the weight savings though and the gun is a hoot. Looking forward to the 500 mag. Now to find some ammo for less than half a dollar a round!

Update: I talked to customer service today and I was told to send the Governor in to be inspected. I am convinced that it is an issue with the finish on the alloy.

Update. Received my Governor back from Smith yesterday. It has been completely refinished and looks brand new. There was, of course, no charge and it was literally overnighted to me as I am hitting the road for points west. I am very pleased with the respone and service. I'm up to four S&W pistols now. Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.

This is true. I use (used) Hoppes all my life on every gun except Nickel and found the clear coat finish on my 642 to be, for the lack of a better word, dissolved and splotchy looking. Not horrible, but I would prefer it not look like that.
