I'm looking to buy a pre-lock 686.

Please explain the differences between a 686 no dash
and a 686-3. Pros & Cons?? Parts changes? Quality control?

I look forward to all of your help & replies!
Thank You.

FYI: The 686-4 is also a pre-lock: The below is just copied and pasted from Wikipedia so I take no credit or responsibility for accuracy.

686 no dash, introduced model
686-1, 1986, radius stud package, floating hand
686-2, 1987, changed hammer nose, bushing and associated parts
686-3, 1988, new yoke retention system
686-4, 1993, change rear sight leaf, drill and tap frame, change extractor, hogue grips
686-5, 1997, change frame design to eliminate cylinder stop stud, eliminate serrated tangs, change to MIM hammer with floating firing pin, change to MIM trigger, change internal lockwork
686-6, 2001, internal lock

The only change to your post is that the storage lock did not come in until the -6 engineering revision in 2001. So the -5 would also be pre-lock

find a 4 inch dash 3 of you can the best of the 686s square butt target grips flash chromed hammer and trigger all the improvements and modifications without any cost cutting measures

I HAVE 2 NO-DASH 686s--A 2 1/2" AND AN 8 3/8"--AND A -3 MOUNTAIN GUN. THEY ARE ALL GREAT SHOOTERS. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A 4" SQUARE BUTT, -4, AS Browns Fan SUGGESTED. THEY ARE RARELY SEEN. THERE'S A BEAUTIFUL 4", NO-DASH FOR AUCTION RIGHT NOW ON GUN BROKER. THE STARTING BID IS $1489. NICE PRE LOCK 686 PRICES ARE ON THE RISE. I REALLY CAN'T JUSTIFY THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER 686, OR I WOULD BID ON THIS ONE…..

IMHO, THE 4" IS THE MOST PERFECTLY BALANCED, AND MOST VERSATILE OF THE 686s. THE 4" MOUNTAIN GUN IS FURTHER ENHANCED BY THE FACT THAT IT IS A 686+, A 7 SHOOTER. I HAD MY NO-DASH 2 1/2" FITTED WITH A 7 SHOT CYLINDER BY S&W. I SENT IT IN FOR THE "M" STAMP RECALL, AND HAD THE WORK DONE WHILE IT WAS THERE, BECAUSE IT IS A CCW. OTHERWISE, I WOULD NOT HAVE BOTHERED. THE EXTRA ROUND CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE--ESPECIALLY AGAINST A FOE THAT IS COUNTING YOUR SHOTS. MY 8 3/8" NO-DASH HAS NO ISSUES, AND HAS NOT BEEN MODIFIED. BELOW IS MY SNUBBY IN EDC / CCW DRESS, AND A PIC OF THE 2 NO-DASH MODELS DRESSED FOR EXTREME DUTY, FIELD CARRY…….…….
