Has anyone with a TRR8 had issues with cracking or frame breakage on the corner under the rear sight?

Yes it's a common problem. Those pesky cracks keep showing up here all the time.
Most have been found to be nothing more than the seam of the side plate.
That's the way they are made. Nothing to worry about.

BTW there is a post of a new 686 with new grips. Just scroll down to the post and look at the picture.
Is that the same thing that you see on your gun?

I wish....
Mine separated and is on its way back to S&W. Guys at the range told me to put a hinge on the bottom and make it into a break action. Hopefully I will get a report back on why the failure occurred. I will post a few pictures when I figure out how to do that.
