I have been to so many sites, and saw so many replies about my gun being and round butt, and a square butt.
It is a 586-8.
I finally went to Smith and Wesson and asked them what do I have, a round our square butt.
They told me according to my serial number it is an L frame with a square butt.
I haven't taken off the grips to see for my self but before I do can anyone confirm what it is? I mean someone who actually took off the grips and saw the handle shape?
I am going to do that but just thought I would make on last ditch effort for someone that has a 586-8.
Once I receive a few answers, and I just know I might get both answers, I am going to take my grips off and see what I have.

SCS&W stops at -6s produced from 1997 to 1999 with the 586 being discontinued that year.

Maybe some newer Performance Center 586s out there like the L-comp.

As a general rule square butt S&Ws were eliminated in 95/96... as frames ran out...... but never say never with S&W.

As a general rule older guns (pre 97/-6s) with barrels less than 4 inches had round butts ; guns with 4 inch or longer barrels were square butts..... the -6s were all (should be) round butts no matter the barrel length.

Taking off the grips is easy; and most do it every time they clean a gun..... especially w/ blue guns as sweat can get under the grips and rust can form fairly quickly.

I am not shy about taking off grips. Especially when I buy a used cop or security gun I want to see how much damage I'll have to deal with. Even with stainless guns the amount of pitting can really be shocking.

All the old 586's and 686's I have from the 1980's have square butts. I would prefer the round butt. That new Performance Center 686 has a short barrel and round butt, but who can afford that at over a grand. I can buy 3 old Smiths to add to my collection for that kind of money.

You don't have to take the grips off. The new standard production M586-8's are shipping with a diamond Magna stock. You can see the entire back strap with the grips in place, and it's square.

586-8 Round or Square Butt

Thanks guys, you were correct. Not sure why I waited to take off the grips so long but I did. Square butt for sure.
