One of the original 5000.
Came with box, docs, wax paper and a second set of grips.

The Standard Catalogue of S&W states they came with a set of Pachmayr grips. These obviously are not. Are they original?

Also were tools still included at this time, or had that gone away when this gun came out in 1989?

I've seen quit a few boxes marked "PM" and the gun inside wore Hogues. For a time I think PM was just generic for any Goodyear. So, it's possible your Hogues are factory but can't say with absolute certainty.

Nice gun,
Those hogues are for a -3, the first run mountain revolvers came wearing k round pachs, these grips had a window on the butt to read the serial number.
Fwiw
I think it looks great wearing combats.

The original 629-2 Mountain revolver came with these style grips

The Rubber Hogues with S&W medallions were OEM issue on other RB N frames such as the 29-5 and are an improvement over the Pachs IMO,

The S&W factory wood FG combats were not offered on the 629-2 Mountain revolver but will fit and add about $300 worth of value.

One of my favorite guns, and the .44 mag I have shot more than any of my others. I think they were about perfect and liked the cleaner appearance and finish over the Mountain gun. I got mine second hand from a good friend and it had the Hogues.

The stocks for the 1989 Mountain Revolver were the Pachmayr SKGR. This is S(mith & Wesson) K(frame) GR(ipper). This is not a mistake in SCSW, the correct stocks are for K-Frame, not N-Frame!

The frame is the same as current standard round-butt N-Frame guns, it is not "K Sized" as many suppose! It is just that the Pachmayr grips are soft enough that they will stretch the slight amount needed. This isn't as hard as it sounds because many of the Pachmayr stocks actually have a bit of clearance over the "knuckle" of the frame. This applies to all frame sizes. This slight looseness allows the K stock to fit the N-Frame with only a slight amount of stretching. I have one of these, original stocks and all, and they are the SKGR, just as the SCSW says is correct!

FWIW, I don't shoot the gun with the original stocks, they are too thin! I shoot it with some smooth Rosewood Magna style stocks I made for it. And, NO, I don't shoot full-snort .44 Magnums out of it, I am not that much of a masochist!!!! The real reason I bought the gun, and a .44 Mountain Gun before it, was simply because I couldn't find a 4" 624!

You are 100% correct. My -3 has the Hogues with will the "REAL" S&W emblem installed. Later Smith with Hogues had the S&W emblem cast into the rubber.

The S&W factory wood FG combats were not offered on the 629-2 Mountain revolver but will fit and add about $300 worth of value.

Then I won't tell you what I paid for it. The asinine gun laws here destroy the value of these fine pistols by only allowing those with grandfathered licences to acquire them.

My friend is pretty insistent that the grips are original, and since this was his only N frame I'm inclined to believe him. Could this be another 'transitional' case?

The 8 3/8-inch M629-2 that was made in the same time frame as your gun had Hogues. So they were sitting around the factory, and it's possible a set made it on to your gun. Stuff like that happens. But I also have another MG in my s/n collection, made just five days before yours. S/n is off by about 200. It had Pachs. Plus, a whole bunch of other -2 MG's, made within a few months, that had Pachs. None had Hogues.

I bought my Mountain Revolver 10years ago. It was a safe queen when I bought it. The gun had a set of Pachmyers on it and came with box and tools. The metal finish under the Pachmyers had black flecks inbedded in the metal. Got the gun at a discount because of the rubber bonding to the finish. Put a set of Ahrends on it. Tight shooting 44. I shoot 245 Keiths any where from 900 to 1100fps and enjoy the weapon.
